Description

Fuels Program Internship 2015, London

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent nonprofit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research and technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. Our mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of road, marine, and air transportation, in order to benefit public health and mitigate climate change. The ICCT is a small and dynamic organization that offers an opportunity to directly contribute to policies addressing climate change and air quality impacts from the transportation sector. The ICCT has offices in Washington DC, San Francisco, Berlin, Beijing and London.

Position Description

The ICCT has an internship opportunity in its London office to work with our fuels program on issues around the commercialisation of the European cellulosic biofuels industry. The successful applicant will support our Fuels Lead to coordinate the ‘Biofrontiers’ research collaborative, working with representatives from the biofuel industry and environmental NGOs. The position will involve elements of event organisation, project management, group coordination and research support. It will provide the successful applicant an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with a coalition of stakeholders to drive European biofuel policy forward into the next decade.  This position will be attractive for students and graduates interested in biofuels and bioenergy, land use and agriculture, and technology commercialisation. We generally expect that applicants will have one or more degrees in technical disciplines such as environmental science, engineering, economics, or the pure sciences, but will consider highly numerate candidates with other backgrounds. The successful candidate will need to display excellent personal organisational and communication skills, as well as strong numeracy and analytical ability. The role will include some or all of the following tasks:

  • Organising and coordinating meetings of the ‘Biofrontiers’ coalition;
  • Attending Biofrontiers coalition meetings in Brussels
  • Contributing to technical and policy research projects on the opportunity for advanced biofuels in Europe

Our Fuels Program is actively engaged globally in the development of policies to promote the use of cleaner fuels in transport. The successful applicant may also be asked to contribute to other projects that work toward the broader mission of the ICCT.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in English is required
  • Fluency in a second European language would be an advantage
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and written and verbal communication skills are required
  • A high level of competence with MS Excel (or comparable analytical tools), and proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint, are required
  • Strong project/task management and organization skills are required
  • Ability to self-start, show initiative and work with limited supervision are vital
  • Understanding of challenges in the commercialisation of new technologies is desirable.

Position Details

The intern is expected to work full-time (preferably) or part-time for up to 20 weeks, starting as soon as possible. There may be scope to extend the position beyond this point by mutual agreement. The location of the internship is the ICCT office in Pimlico, London. The internship will be paid commensurate with experience.
