ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Freshwater Specialist provides technical and scientific support for freshwater ecosystem services conservation initiatives and measures of conservation success (MOS). Performs a variety of scientific tasks and/or conservation activities, which provide experience and familiarity with scientific staff, methods, practices and programs.  This may include some or all of the following functions:

  • Collects and manages data for Atlantic Forest and Central Savannas Ecosystem Services Projects
  • Conducts surveys and research, records data, writes project reports, and develops proposals
  • Delivers conservation tools, and training to Conservancy staff and its partners
  • Coordinates fieldwork and logistical support for research, project development and monitoring
  • Assess the effect of environmental changes on streams discharges and water quality and studying the effects on flows and water quality resulting from land use such as afforestation or crop irrigation
  • Applies hydrological and statistical techniques to water resources planning and flood mitigation
  • Supervises water monitoring in project sites with TNC staff and partners

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree in science-related to hydrology or natural resources management field (Engineer, Ecology, Biology, Geology, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience collecting, manipulating, analyzing and interpreting scientific data and preparing reports of findings.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite Software.
  • Experience communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English (and other relevant languages).
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in science related to hydrology or natural resources management field (Engineer, Ecology, Biology, Geology desired.
  • Experience with the analysis of hydrologic data and water quality analysis
  • Experience in environmental flows requirement methods and ecohydrology approach for water allocation desired;
  • Perform GIS analysis and ability to run hydrological tools in GIS environmental, such as InVEST, ARIES, SWAT, VIC, GSSHA, etc.
  • Knowledge of natural freshwater ecosystem management and payment for ecosystem services initiatives.
  • Knowledge in water accountability methods (water footprint, life cycle analysis and traditional water allocation systems);
  • Knowledge in water tradeoffs with forest conservation and climate change interaction;
  • Experience in undertaking hydrological modeling to allow assist the planning of water resources availability by forecasting and monitoring water usage.
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work.
  • Knowledge of Freshwater Ecology and Ecosystem Services is desirable.
  • Fluency in Portuguese and Working knowledge in English required. Working knowledge of Spanish desirable.
