POSITION SUMMARY
The Freshwater Specialist works closely with the Director of Conservation Science, partner organizations and local landowners to research and gather aquatic data relating to watershed health in order to identify priorities and direct the implementation of conservation actions in the Boone River watershed of north central Iowa.  Primary goals of this 3-year grant funded position are to work with the Boone River Watershed Association (BRWA) and relevant sub-watershed groups and/or advisory committees to design long-term biological monitoring and develop support for volunteer efforts; explore potential stream/streambank restoration projects within the watershed; work with landowners to initiate appropriate best management practices for water quality improvement and support the existing paired watershed study; and  provide direction and freshwater science knowledge to the BRWA as they develop their watershed plan.  Conservation work in the BRW is primarily within private lands, the ability to maintain productive respectful relationships with private landowners is a critical component to this position.  We anticipate funding this position beyond the 3-year grant period and expanding the position to other freshwater priority areas in Iowa.  Preferred work location is within the watershed in Webster City, Iowa.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Specific tasks may include some or all of the following:
• Gather and synthesize freshwater data to test the effectiveness of BMPs and direct the implementation of conservation actions
• Work with partners to gain permission to conduct work on private lands
• Design and implement a volunteer-driven long-term freshwater monitoring protocol
• Work with partners, the Boone River Watershed Association, NRCS and local landowners to achieve freshwater conservation goals
• Assist partners with design of single landowner planning, i.e. provide freshwater conservation knowledge to farm management plans
• Assist with habitat assessments of aquatic and related upland environments
• Conduct surveys, record and analyze data, and write project reports
• Perform fieldwork, including ecosystem assessment and field monitoring
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in science-related field and 2-3 years related experience, graduate degree and 0-1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience utilizing GIS software and data to create maps.
• Experience conducting surveys, recording data, and writing project reports concerning.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software. 
• Experience managing databases and producing reports.
• Experience coordinating multiple projects and managing timeframes.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
• Knowledge of native freshwater systems and restoration techniques, knowledge of Iowa systems preferred.
• Experience with biological and water quality monitoring and monitoring design.
• Ability to explain complicated science topics to laypersons of all walks of life, sound “people skills”
• Ability to work cooperatively with partners including government, NGO, civic leaders, farmers and other water users.
• Knowledge of drainage management regulation in Iowa is a plus but not required.
• Analyzing, manipulating, and interpreting data, including statistics
• GIS experience, including ability to utilize data to create appropriate maps
• Database management skills including report production
• Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
• Managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English

SALARY INFORMATION
$35,000 - $40,000
