NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced freshwater ecology technician for a permanent position in our Hamilton office to support a range of largely freshwater projects. The position will mainly provide technical support for research and consultancy work focused on freshwater fish and invertebrate ecology but with the expectation that you would also work across a range of other freshwater and marine areas as required. Key tasks will include but not be limited to:

  • Carrying out freshwater fish surveys and biotelemetry monitoring of fish populations
  • Carrying out macroinvertebrate sampling and processing of samples
  • Carrying out field work including scuba and snorkel diving and skippering small boats
  • Planning and logistics for fieldwork excursions
  • Use of specialised environmental monitoring instruments
  • Data collation, analysis and archiving

You will need to have qualifications in an ecological science or a related field and several years' relevant experience working in an environmental management or science role. You must have boating experience and be familiar with freshwater invertebrate and fish sampling, including electric fishing. You will need to be able to work flexible hours and undertake field trips lasting several days away from Hamilton.
