Job purpose

This job helps to sustain Wales’ natural heritage so that everyone can enjoy and benefit from it. You will do this by helping to manage the Dyfi National Nature as part of Operation Services North and Mid.

Job Specific Responsibilities

The Seasonal Assistant Reserve Managers will carry out the day to day running of the Ynyslas Visitor Centre and busy Ynyslas dunes (225,000 visitors annually) that are part of the Dyfi National Nature Reserve. Responsibilities include...           

  • Carry out reserve patrols and day-to-day visitor management, including policing of site regulations to ensure we fulfil our duty of care to the visiting public.
  • Control vehicle access to the reserve and parking ensuring any observed or reported incidents including possible infringements of the road traffic act are reported to the Police.
  • Staff the reserve centre and shop, handling sales of leaflets, books, postcards etc, and answer queries by the public about the reserve.
  • Collect litter and carry out other cleaning duties to ensure compliance with the litter act.
  • Provide advice to visitors on site safety matters particularly in relation to the red flag status of the beach and estuary, liaise with coastguard on potential incidents and    provide first aid.
  • Assist with practical site maintenance.
  • Assist with site survey and visitor monitoring.
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others and comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.
  • Carry out other general duties as necessary.

In addition, particular duties will be the responsibility of individuals within the seasonal team:

  • In the shop: monitor stock, prepare daily accounts and banking receipts, organise season ticket sales through local post offices.
  • Prepare an end of season report.
  • Prepare work rotas and duties.
  • Maintain the schools booking system.
  • Maintain the marine aquarium.

Job Specific Requirements

  • A commitment to good customer service in our dealings with the general public.
  • A knowledge of natural history and practical countryside management skills.
  • Good interpersonal and team working skills.
  • The ability to deliver talks and lead guided walks.
  • The ability to currently and legally drive a car in the UK.
  • A working knowledge of first aid.
  • Knowledge of coastal ecology.
  • An interest in providing outdoor educational activities for schools.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Access to some form of private transport (due to lack of public transport in the area).

Due consideration has been given to the Welsh language requirements for the post and the existing skills within the team. Taking this into consideration the Welsh language skills required for the post are at  

Level 1 for 2 of the posts - The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (eg “bore da” – “good morning”) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly.

Level 4 for 2 of the posts- Fluency in spoken Welsh

Status

This is a fixed term, pensionable full-time seasonal appointment from the 23rd March 2015 to the 25th September 2015. You will be required to work 37 hours a week. At peak periods more time will be spent keeping the centre open longer into the early evening. The centre is kept open seven days a week throughout the season and you will be required to work most weekends and Bank holidays with two days off during the week.

Salary

Starting Salary of £15,000 (pro rata)
