Job Title Foundation Degree Trainee Location Various Salary band £15,000 Training Allowance Contract type Full-time Reference number 718679 Description of the job River and Coastal Engineering Foundation Degree Up to £15,000 training allowance over the two year programme + tuition fees. Study at the University of the West of England, Bristol, followed by a work placement at locations nationwide About us We’re the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment and make it a better place for people and wildlife. We operate at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate. About the Foundation Degree Floods can happen anywhere, anytime. And, as we’ve all seen, flooding has a dramatic – sometimes life-changing - impact on people, properties and businesses. In fact, over 5.5 million people in England and Wales live and work in properties that are at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea. That’s why we’re constantly working to reduce the risks to people, households and businesses from flooding and help people to improve, protect, value and enjoy their local environment. And it’s why, in our opinion, the River and Coastal Engineering Foundation Degree is such a challenging, rewarding, exciting and worthwhile programme to join. The two-year programme combines academic study with on-the-job learning. You’ll spend the first nine months studying at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol. The following 15 months will be spent working with the Environment Agency or a local authority on a work-based training and development programme. This means working with on-the-ground teams, experiencing firsthand the full range of flood risk management activities. During this time you’ll continue your study too, as well as attend UWE for roughly four one-week study blocks. Throughout the two years, you’ll have an experienced and inspiring mentor to support and guide you. About you Commitment. That’s the first thing you need. You’ll thrive on a challenge and be keen to start learning and building your rewarding engineering career. You’ll also need to be organised and confident taking control of your own study and work. You’ll need A Level Maths (or equivalent qualification) and a minimum of 180 predicted UCAS points. A full list of entry requirements can be found on the UWE website (link below). The future Where you go after the Foundation Degree is really up to you. Past students have continued in higher education. Others have gone on to work with us here at the Environment Agency or with local authorities nationwide. But whichever path you chose, you can be sure that you’re on the right road to a professionally challenging and personally rewarding career. Apply For further information or to apply for the Foundation Degree programme, please visit http://courses.uwe.ac.uk/H221/2014 For all applicants we need to verify their right to work/study in the UK for the duration of the course and no offers will be made without this check being in place. Please note that non EEA (European Economic Area) applicants are not eligible for sponsorship for the foundation degree as they would not meet the minimum requirements for tier 2 or 4 sponsorship. Closing date for the first round of applications: 15 January 2014 Assessment centres will be held in April 2014 If you are applying from the Civil Service please note that the Environment Agency is not a part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant in the event of being appointed. Therefore, you will not be eligible for continuous service. For applicants who currently work in local government or other bodies listed in the Redundancy Payments (Continuity of Employment in Local Government etc) (Modification) Order 1999, you may be eligible for continuous service for the purpose of calculating any future redundancy payment.
