Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires students and recent college graduates to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-the-ground work in the world of conservation. Additionally, the GLOBE program provides interns with the chance to directly work toward a sustainable future for our planet on the side of the Conservancy, the world’s largest environmental organization.

The Forests and Climate Measures and Communications Intern supports the Nature Conservancy’s Forests and Climate team through assessment of performance against program goals, as well as through capture and dissemination of key lessons learned from our Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) work. The Forests and Climate Strategy, one of the Conservancy’s top global priorities, is working to reduce global deforestation and degradation with a goal to reduce carbon emissions, improve the livelihoods of communities who live and around forests, protect critical watersheds, and conserve biodiversity.  The Forests and Climate Team focuses on demonstrating successful models of low-carbon development in the Brazilian Amazon, Indonesia and Mexico; draws from these demonstration efforts to inform a broader group of countries building national programs to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation; and works to expand the political commitment and funding for forest protection globally. The Forests and Climate program is a nine-person team based in the Conservancy’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, and works closely with over one hundred field and policy staff involved in this strategy around the world.  The Intern will support  the nine-person, Arlington-based Forests and Climate team through the following key functions:

• Conservation Impact Measures (~50%):  Through the Conservation Impact Measures initiative, the Forests and Climate team has identified measures, indicators, data sources and goals in the areas of REDD+ policy, finance, ecology, social science and management. Moving forward, performance against these measures will be monitored and reported.  The Intern will interview key TNC staff, as well as review relevant literature/resources, to assess progress made in FY14 against all or a subset of Forests and Climate Conservation Impact Measures, and summarize in a final report.  This information will be used in the creation of a 1-page dashboard, utilized by senior leadership to review program performance and assess where changes might be needed.  This work is essential to monitor progress and communicate our program achievements to marketing, communications, philanthropy and the board.
• Knowledge Management and Communications (~50%):  The Forests and Climate team is committed to designing and implementing a robust knowledge management plan. The Intern will work with Forest & Climate team members on priority knowledge management projects such as writing fact sheets and case studies about our work, holding events to disseminate lessons to policy makers, and maintaining internal and external websites. This work is essential to help capture institutional knowledge and use it to influence REDD+ policy and program design.

• 3 years of undergraduate study plus 1 year relevant experience or equivalent, or 1 year of graduate study in relevant field.
• Experience manipulating, analyzing and/or interpreting data
• Experience producing professional outputs such as reports, presentations, memos and case studies
• Experience in writing, research and analytics.
• Experience in verbal and written communication.
• Experience with organizational and attention to detail
• Experience organizing time, working independently and meeting deadlines
• Experience in MS office; Word, Excel and Power Point, including database management skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation, Green Growth/Sustainable Development, US and International Climate Change Policy, Climate Finance, Forestry, Knowledge Management
• Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese and/or Bahasa
• Familiarity with SharePoint and basic website design

• This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 1, 2014 - August 8, 2014.

Intern Selection Process
