Description:
The Great Basin Institute is recruiting a Forest Stand Exam Team (Crew Lead and Forestry Technician) to complete a forest stand exam for the Little Valley and Arrowhawk portions of the Carson Ranger District. After establishing reference point and plot locations, the team will record the basal area factor (BAF), fixed plot size, and number of plots in accordance with established stand exam protocols. Plot data (e.g.: aspect, slope, elevation, habitat type); tree data, including damage; as well as vegetation, surface cover and down woody material data will all be collected. Photopoints documenting plot location are also required. The team is responsible for data entry and quality assurance.
Compensation:
o Crew Lead: $17.00 - $19.00/hour
o Forestry Technician: $12.00 - $15.00/hour
Timeline & Location:
o ~ 1 month (180 hours) in October/November
o Carson City/Reno, NV
Crew Leader Required Qualifications:
o Undergraduate courses in, tree identification, plant identification, silviculture, ecology, and mensuration;
o A minimum of three months experience collecting data for Forest inventory or vegetation classification;
o Proficient in the interpretation of aerial photography and associated maps;
o Ability to distinguish between stand types both in the field and on original or photocopied aerial photographs;
o Proficient in the use of forest measurement equipment (e.g.: compass or clinometers), as well as knowledge in the use of pacing and map measurements;
o Ability to accurately identify Sierra Foothill tree, shrub, forb, and grass species needed for identifying local habitat types; and
o Knowledge of rating tree defects and parasitic plants, as well as common forest insect pests and diseases.
Forestry Technician Required Qualifications:
o Participation in or exposure to forest health survey protocols such as stand exam or timber stand inventory;
o Familiarity with Sierra Foothill mixed conifer and montane tree and plant communities;
o Ability to learn and adhere to established field protocols; and
o Ability to work productively as part of a team.
Additional Qualifications:
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, traverse uneven terrain, carry up to 25 pounds for up to 10 hours/day, and/or hike cross-country for extended distances (8-10 miles);
o Possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with knowledge of or ability to learn how to safely operate a 4WD pickup truck on- and off-road.
