Title:               Forest Management Associate, Central Canada, SmartWood Program

Reports to:     Regional Manager, Canada Region, SmartWood Program

Location:         Ottawa-Gatineau region, Canada

SmartWood is a program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989; it is the oldest global forestry certification program and has been accredited by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SmartWood's mission is to promote the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide. To accomplish this, SmartWood provides forest management and chain of custody certification services. Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification verifies the flow of certified forest products through the supply chain, from the forest to the point of sale, assuring consumers and forest product companies that the wood they buy comes from certified forests.

Position Summary

Under the Regional Manager's supervision, the Forest Management Associate will be responsible for providing forest management certification and verification services for a growing portfolio of clients in Ontario and Manitoba. S/he will support the promotion and development of forest management certification and verification services to clients in that region and will provide support to the Certification Services Coordinator (CSC) in Canada.

Responsibilities

 

  • Serve as Ontario and Manitoba point person for forest management and verification issues;
  • Conduct forest management certification and verification assessments and audits as requested;
  • Perform certification task management functions for forest management certification and verification work;
  • Inform local representatives of forest management assessment and audit status;
  • Provide support to Regional Manager in certification service functions;
  • Promote and develop certification and verification services in Ontario and Manitoba;
  • As directed by the Regional Manager, maintain, implement, and revise Certification Quality Systems documentation for all forest management and verification work;
  • Assist in the development of materials and programs to train consultants to perform assessments and audits as requested;
  • Support the development and launch of new products and services;
  • Assist in field testing of new products and further develop new forest management products;
  • Receive, process and file forms, conduct data entry and other information or full range of certification and other services;
  • Provide administrative support to technical staff including preparing agreements; receiving, processing, and distributing forms; and other logistics related to direct certification services;
  • Maintain accuracy of Ontario and Manitoba certification related information in SmartWood database;
  • Coordinate and liaise with Vermont and Canada SmartWood staff on database entry and other tasks related to certification services;
  • Assist with maintaining certification client files including all correspondence, reports and related documents;
  • Review, approve and distribute certification reports to clients;
  • Support the Certification Services Coordinator and other staff with general administrative functions as needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree, in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Forest Ecology or related field; Master's Degree a plus;
  • Minimum 2 - 5 years work experience in forestry, forest ecology or related field;
  • Background or interest in environmental conservation preferred;
  • Environmental management system auditor experience a plus;
  • Knowledge of SmartWood certification and/or FSC certification a plus;
  • Experience in supervision, training and mentoring preferred;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Strong presentation skills;
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, database, and Internet);
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; French a plus; and
  • Willingness and ability to travel 20 percent of time.
