Overview

The People & Ecosystems Program (PEP) at the World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a results-oriented Forest Legality Alliance Manager to successfully lead the Forest Legality Alliance and ensure it achieves its mission.  The Forest Legality Alliance is a joint effort of WRI and the Environmental Investigation Agency, supported by the United States Agency for International Development and companies in the forest sector.  Its goal is to reduce illegal logging through supporting the supply of legal forest products.  For more information about the Alliance, visitwww.forestlegality.org

 

The Manager will be part of WRI’s Forests Initiative, which seeks to increase the ability of governments, businesses, and civil society to act upon better and more widely shared information to protect intact forests, manage working forests more sustainably, and restore deforested lands.

Responsibilities

Working with team members and partners from other organizations:

  • Convene the Forest Legality Alliance for semi-annual meetings, provide technical support to corporate members in between meetings, raise the profile of its impact, and ensure the Alliance is achieving its mission.
  • Refine tools designed to help companies avoid procurement of illegally harvested wood and paper products.
  • Train companies in the forest product supply chain, non-governmental organizations, and enforcement officials on how to use these tools.
  • Work with leading technology institutions to test and refine methods (e.g., DNA, fiber testing) for better tracking forest products from mill to shelf.
  • Direct analysis and lead the writing of briefs and publications that popularize the application of approaches to avoiding procurement of illegally harvested wood and paper products.  
  • Engage governments of leading forest product importing countries/regions on how to strengthen their laws prohibiting trade in illegally sourced wood products.
  • Develop and manage project workplans and budgets.
  • Develop, fundraise for, and implement new WRI projects aligned with the Forest Initiative. 
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a masters degree in natural resources management, environmental and trade law, forestry, or a related field.
  • Eight or more years of relevant professional experience in international forestry issues such as forest product trade, forest product supply chain management, forest product procurement policies and practices, and/or forest trade legality and enforcement.
  • Deep understanding of forest product supply chains, the role of technology in increasing forest product traceability, and policies aimed at improving the legality of international forest product trade (e.g., U.S. Lacey Act, EU Timber Regulation, EU FLEGT, Australia Illegal Logging Prohibition, etc.).
  • Successful track record working with stakeholder processes and demonstrated ability to assert initiative and leadership.     
  • Private sector experience on forest issues.
  • Proven project and team management skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Fluency in oral and written English. Fluency in another language relevant to global forest product supply chains is a plus.
  • International work experience and outstanding cross-cultural and inter-personal skills.
  • Demonstrated superb analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • A strong, proven ability to deliver real-world results.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet research.
  • Willingness to travel 20-30 percent of the time.
