Overview

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is an action-oriented, global organization with offices in Washington, DC, China, and India, and a presence in Brazil.  WRI was recently voted the world’s top think tank on the environment and on natural resources.

WRI’s People & Ecosystems Program (PEP) is seeking a professional economist to conduct a variety of economic analyses that advance the objective of the following area:

  • Forest restoration:   WRI is engaging governments to inspire, enable, and implement restoration of forest landscapes in order to achieve the Bonn Challenge of getting 150 million hectares of lost or degraded forests in the process of restoration by 2050 (http://www.wri.org/project/forest-landscape-restoration).

 

The economist will be part of WRI’s People & Ecosystems Program, which seeks to reverse the rapid degradation of ecosystems and assure their capacity to provide people with needed goods and services.  For more information, visit www.wri.org

Responsibilities
  • Effectively plan, design, and conduct economic analyses that advance the objectives of project teams working on issues of water, sustainable agriculture, or forest restoration. 
  • Critically analyze and assess economic research and arguments presented by project partners, stakeholders, and others.
  • Improve the results of these economic analyses in a manner that is precise, well structured, and tailored to decision-makers (not to other professional economists).  This written material may take the form of informal memos, white papers, and official WRI publications.  Some research may be submitted to economic journals, as well.
  • Present findings of economic analyses to external audiences.
  • Actively engage public and private sector decision-makers in one-on-one meetings, group briefings, and other venues to persuade them of WRI’s analytically based recommendations.  
  • Review and write portions of fundraising proposals.  
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in natural resource economics or related economic field. PhD highly preferred.
  • At least five years of relevant professional experience (10 years if at master’s level) in conducting economic analyses in support of sustainable development. 
  • Deep knowledge and experience in the economics of agriculture, water, or forest restoration, or a combination of these fields.  
  • Demonstrated ability in conducting economic analyses, including modeling, statistics, and econometrics.
  • Strong track record of authoring published research.
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write quickly under pressure and to deadline; ability to summarize complicated analyses in brief and clear messages.
  • Fluency in oral and written English. Fluency in another language is a plus.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and persuasive oral presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively on project teams.
  • Strong commitment to deliver real-world results.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet research.
  • Willingness to travel 20 percent of the time.
