Forest Black-Cockatoo Project Coordinator

Date Added:
Monday, 13 April 2015

Description:

An exciting opportunity has opened at BirdLife Australia to contribute to
the recovery of the endangered Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus
baudinii) and the Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii
naso), collectively referred to as Forest Black-Cockatoos.

Based in Perth, this position will work to acquit a Lotterywest grant received
by BirdLife Australia. The project is modelled on BirdLife Australia’s decade-long
recovery program for Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris)
and will involve the community, various government and non-government organisations
including the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW), orchardists, universities
and schools.

The role will also liaise with relevant BirdLife Australia projects in WA
and nationally to harness synergies and opportunities for additional funding.

Very little is known about the population size and dynamics of the two types
of Forest Black-Cockatoos, their seasonal movements and habitat use.

The project coordinator will work to build capacity in the community to
clarify these aspects of the species’ biology, with one key element of the
work being the establishment of a waterhole count survey methodology to
enable an annual snapshot census of the populations of both species.

The role will also work to promote Forest Black-Cockatoo conservation in
schools and local communities, identify and assess critical habitat features
for the two species, and develop promotional materials.

The role involves working collaboratively with relevant NRM and community
groups, local governments and volunteers and will require effective communication,
including the planning and delivery of community training workshops.

The position is initially offered as full-time 2 year contract, with ongoing
extensions subject to available funding and acceptable performance. The
position is based at the BirdLife Australia office in Floreat, Western Australia.
The applicant must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and
currently entitled to work in Australia without restriction.
