Forest Advocate, Arizona and New Mexico

General position overview:
The Center for Biological Diversity, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
dedicated to the protection of imperiled animals, plants and wild places,
seeks an experienced advocate to defend and protect national forests and
waters in Arizona and New Mexico by deeply engaging in the forest plan revision
process and on-the-ground projects. The Forest Advocate is part of the Public
Lands program, reports directly to the Public Lands Ecologist and will work
closely with other conservation and communications staff.
Organize conservation allies to analyze, comment on and generally engage
in all aspects of ongoing forest plan revisions for 11 national forests
in Arizona and New Mexico (Region 3).
Organize and turn out people for town hall meetings, agency hearings and
comment periods. Create events in which constituents have an opportunity
to make their voices heard and hold politicians accountable regarding national
forest health and related issues.
Track, analyze and comment on forest projects throughout Region 3.
Conduct field visits to assess forest projects throughout Region 3.
Assist with analyzing and developing comments for forest plan revisions.
Create news actions to get the word out about Center’s Southwest forest
campaign through the media. Meet with editorial boards and get op-eds published.
Develop materials for the Public Lands program website highlighting threats
to Southwest forests and waters and making the case for protecting and restoring
public lands values.
Engage the public through action alerts and other tools to ensure that political
leaders hear constituent voices in support of protecting forests and species
on national forests in Arizona and New Mexico.
Engage with and recruit other environmental groups, and a broad range of
constituents — including religious organizations, hunting and fishing groups,
youth organizations, local and outdoor recreation businesses, and others
— to join the Center’s campaign.
Essential qualities, qualifications and skills desired:
Minimum bachelor’s degree in relevant fields. Master or doctoral degree
preferred.
Demonstrated leadership and organizing skills.
Demonstrated analytical abilities.
Familiarity of southwestern ecosystems, public lands issues and regional
politics preferred.
Experience with National Environmental Policy Act, National Forest Management
Act and Endangered Species Act.
Passion and successful track record for organizing, educating and motivating
others.
Experience conducting research, including database work, highly preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated experience with similar job duties.
Ability and willingness to travel.
Passion for and knowledge of the natural world, biodiversity, wildlife and
waters.
Salary is commensurate with experience and comparable to that of other nonprofits.

is the Center’s Tucson, Arizona office. Other locations in the Southwest
region may be considered.
