Food Security and Environment Fellow
Location: Arlington, Va.
Job Code: 290
# of openings: 1

Description

POSITION TITLE: Food Security and Environment Fellow

LOCATION: Arlington, VA

UNIT: Environmental Resources Trust (ERT)

BACKGROUND:

In recent years Winrock, through its field-based, participatory and interdisciplinary approach, has been engaged in many aspects of the food security and environment nexus, and has worked to:

• Build the capacity of agriculture leaders
• Develop value chains that engage smallholder farmers
• Leverage market mechanisms (carbon offsets, nutrient trading, low-GHG certification schemes) to enhance agricultural competitiveness
• Develop low-emission strategies for future agricultural production
• Increase agricultural yields and productivity
• Increase efficiency of water use in agriculture
• Manage lands to reduce pressure on biodiverse ecosystems
• Improve availability of nutritious foods in disadvantaged communities

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Food Security and Environment fellow’s primary objective will be to figure out how Winrock can build global capacity to ensure nutritious food supplies while sustaining natural resources, including addressing future land and water requirements. This is a one year fellowship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Select key activities where Winrock can add value to food security and environment initiatives – The Fellow should arrive at Winrock with ideas about who to work with and what to work on. During the Fellow’s first month, Winrock will organize a series of internal and external meetings to expose the Fellow to key food security and climate change initiatives and staff at Winrock and at other organizations. The Fellow will then refine his/her workplan in order to strengthen its integration into Winrock’s existing work and network of partners, as well as connections to other Winrock staff.

Increase Winrock’s visibility on food security and environment issues by implementing projects – The Fellow will be expected to move the field forward by implementing relevant projects. The Fellow will connect Winrock with the ideas and initiatives of others, forming strategic partnerships and incorporating one or more cutting-edge conceptual tools and approaches into Winrock’s work. The successful Fellow will be confident about the compelling benefits of their proposed work, and capable of raising funds to support their ideas.
Achieve on-the-ground impact – The Fellow should seek to answer the question, “How will we know if our food security and environment work is making a difference?” The Fellow’s performance will be measured by his/her ability to implement one or more projects and achieve results.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITES

• Actively seek collaborative relationships with Winrock staff and partners
• Oversee project activities to ensure smooth management and timely implementation
• Ensure sound management of finances, and ensure that all financial transactions follow Winrock policy

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• PhD in agricultural sciences
• Minimum 2 years experience required, either before or after PhD
• Understanding of key stakeholders in food security and environment.
• Interested in working with partners from a broad range of backgrounds and disciplines.
• Excellent management, communication, and organization skills.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Excellent computer skills (word-processing, spreadsheets, and databases).
