REPORTING LINES: Post holder reports to: the Head of the Economic Justice policy team. Staff reporting to this post: None

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY: None

Job Purpose:
Hunger is the one of the greatest injustices of our times. Every night for decades, over 800m people have gone to bed hungry. In 2008 the global food price crisis pushed that number over one billion for the first time in history. And yet the planet currently produces enough food for everyone. We have the means to end today's hunger, but power and politics prevents it happening.

But the food price crisis is also an early indication of even greater challenges to come. On current trends, the next 20 years will see global demand for food increase by 50%, for water by 30%, and energy by 50%. Yet there are already clear limits to the planet's resources, especially agricultural land, fresh water, and the atmosphere's absorptive capacity. If we are to end hunger permanently, we must rapidly transform how we use these resources.

The next phase of Oxfam's priority Economic Justice campaign will focus on Food Justice, and the reforms to the global food system needed to address the hunger of today, and ensure food for all tomorrow. This crucial role will lead on public policy and lobby work on all aspects of food justice, working with campaigners and media staff to ensure Oxfam is a leading agent for change. They will also work closely with policy advisers on climate change, sustainable agriculture and emergency food security to deliver integrated policy approaches and advocacy strategies.

  • Work with media and campaigns staff to develop communication and campaign strategies as appropriate.
