There has never been a more exciting and challenging time to join Greenpeace Africa, to help build people-powered campaigns - all backed by an organization with a long-established track record for taking non-violent direct action based on respected science, creative communications, precedent-setting legal action and carried by the long reach of its ships.

The Greenpeace International "Food for Life" campaign aims to fix the broken food system by influencing politics, business, consumers, farmers and financial flows to shift towards ecological farming. As part of the world-led campaign, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a successful campaign strategy in East Africa. You will also be an active participant in the development of the global campaign.

Job requirements

  • Ability to analyze environmental issues, identify campaign opportunities and overall strategic objectives.
  • Ability to use initiative, creativity, and team building in devising campaign strategies and achieving objectives.
  • Ability to be innovative and imaginative in solving problems arising out of campaigns.
  • Ability to act as a spokesperson for the organization.
  • Specific expertise in one or more of, and ability to become skilled in, the remaining key campaign tools: use of non-violent direct action; public communication and engagement activities; online and offline mobilization; use of traditional and new media; political and corporate work; use of science and of the law.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently both on the continent and beyond.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in face-to-face meetings and in difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with other team members.
  • Willingness to accept and implement team decisions and/or those taken by the Programme Director and the Global Campaign Leader.
  • Ability to work through conflict constructively with others.
  • Ability to recognize own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ability to take risks and learn from failure.

Minimum requirements of role 

  • University Degree (advanced degree an advantage).
  • 5 years’ experience of campaign management and coordination.
  • 3 years’ experience of managing and developing a team.
  • Working knowledge of the Agriculture sector in East Africa.
  • Working knowledge of global and regional food and agriculture trends.
  • Experience of working in an international, multi-cultural and dynamic team.
  • Fluent in English (Swahili an advantage).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people of varying backgrounds, both verbally and in writing.

  • Passion for the environment and food/agriculture issues.
  • Willingness to work on a wide range of issues.
  • A high degree of initiative and organization.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Personal belief in, and support for, the aims and methods of Greenpeace.
  • Willingness to work unsocial hours as required.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
