Full-time position:                    36 hours per week

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Wetlands International Flyway Programme Manager (FPM) reports to the Head Biodiversity and Ecological Networks and works closely with Biodiversity team staff worldwide and Heads of Offices. Important representation function if it comes to advocating and implementing flyway work. The FPM, in consultation with the Head Biodiversity is responsible for the development and implementation of Wetlands Internationals Flyway work in and delivering this work into the Shell-Wetlands International Partnership, profiling Wetlands International as THE waterbird flyway authority, worldwide.

Main Duties

  • Develop and implement Flyway work globally,
  • In consultation with Head Biodiversity, develop a ‘flyway vision’ for Wetlands International for promoting the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands and their biodiversity, habitats and ecosystem services as well as their integration into sustainable development, benefitting biodiversity and people, especially local communities
  • Lead on strategic planning for implementation of the flyway vision and provide flyway coordination
  • In collaboration with Global Biodiversity Team, provide strategic and technical input into flyway initiatives and activities
  • Develop strategic flyway partnerships
  • Develop flyway project proposals
  • Manage flyway projects
  • Liaise with existing flyway initiatives around the world  
  • Represent Wetlands International in flyway and conservation related work and events.
  • Communicate the flyway work of Wetlands International
  • Identify strategic issues (like emerging avian diseases and climate change) that require/benefit from flyway input.

Profile

The successful candidate is a networker with excellent understanding of international collaboration in the field of waterbird and wetland conservation and the flyway issue. Communicative and articulate, he/she is well able to profile Wetlands International as the authority in flyway thinking and implementation, especially for waterbirds. Science based approach with good knowledge of waterbird and wetland science and strong interest in international conservation and sustainable development and the links between them. Strong network of contacts of relevant individuals, institutions, governments and (inter)national organisations. Team-player. Inter-cultural sensitivity.

Excellent representational skills and excellent communication skills both verbally (presentations, chairing meetings etc) and written. Proven project management and reporting skills.

The ideal candidate will have strong creative and problem-solving skills and an ability to stimulate, engage and facilitate group processes and stimulate engagement in international collaboration. Sensitive to budget constraints and an open eye for funding opportunities. He or she will have an understanding of NGO culture and ways of operation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in relevant Science, combined with at least 10 years of working experience in international context
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) with fluent English 
  • Working experience in the NGO or Corporate sector, including a substantial amount of project development and management on major, multi-site or regional/ flyway programmes and projects
  • Personal network of contacts with relevant stakeholders in flyway work around the world.
  • Authority in the field of waterbird and wetlands conservation and in the flyway approach.
  • Experience of working in an international multi-cultural community with multi-site organisations 
  • An appreciation for the role of international non-governmental organisations in delivering sustainable development solutions.
  • Additional language skills are a pre, particularly French, (Russian, Spanish, Chinese)
  • Ability to travel and work independently.
  • Specific experience referring to and in line with main duties.
