Description

The Forecasting and Modelling team was set up as part of the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) change. The team includes technical experts in flood forecasting, modelling and hydrology for the South West region.

Our work on understanding and communicating flood risk information, both in ‘real time’ and for strategic requirements, underpins all Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) work to help us manage flood incidents effectively; improve the flood warning service to our public and partners; identify where we can improve protection to people and property and help organisations and the public understand flood risk and help protect themselves.

The role

We are looking for a technical team member to join the Modelling and Hydrology Team, to help deliver our regional modelling programme. The post will ideally be based in our Exeter office although we are flexible.

The role will involve a range of activities in flood and coastal risk management from updating National Flood Risk Assessment (NaFRA) to calculating return periods for recent flood events. We need someone with an eye for detail and close links to Area FCRM to gather and provide data such as hydraulic model outputs. There will be a chance to project manage the build of new models and/or to run and maintain existing models as required to deliver the modelling programme.

The team

Modelling and Hydrology are a dispersed team based across 4 offices in Southwest, including: Blandford, Bodmin, Bridgwater and Exeter.

We are technical team responsible for local updates to NaFRA. We deliver the mapping/modelling programme for Southwest through a mix of in-house modelling and commissioning consultants utilising project management skills. We also use our existing models to check high risk Flood Risk Assessments with area Partnership & Strategic Overview (PSO) teams and seek opportunities to improve our evidence with developers and partners.

Experience/skills required

Ideally, you'll have a broad knowledge of Flood Risk Management and hydrology.

Experience is required:

• in flood risk management;

• civil engineering, hydrology;

• environmental science;

• geography or in a related subject.

This experience can be gained through formal qualifications, such as a degree, or through relevant work experience.

Good computing skills and communications skills are required, together with a passion for analysis and problem-solving. This will help achieve the team’s aim of an ‘intelligent client’ understanding of modelling and survey.

Additional useful information

The role will be based out of our Manley House office in Exeter as the preferred location and is flexible for the right person.

For further details please contact Craig Jones, Modelling and Hydrology Team Leader, on 01392 354121 or by email:craig.jones@environment-agency.gov.uk .
