ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Fisheries Specialist/Applied Scientist III –assists in the development and implementation of TNC’s Global Fisheries Strategy and helps drive implementation of the overall business plan across the organization to achieve planned conservation outcomes. The position will manage projects and provide technical and scientific support for elements of The Nature Conservancy’s Global Fisheries Strategy. S/he supports the fisheries global strategy lead by coordinating and supporting priority projects and serving as a technical resource on sustainable fisheries.  The position will apply a diversified knowledge of fisheries-related scientific principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments, from research, analysis and writing, to strategy development, project coordination and management support, and engagement with private sector seafood actors and traceability systems. Initial focal areas of work will include:

  • Providing project management support, leading desk-based research and analyses, and preparing written materials for an online coral reef fisheries training module;
  • Participating in, and providing project support to the Science for Nature and People working group focusing on data limited stock assessment methods. Tasks include participating in at least one of the sub-working groups, coordination of peer reviews and co-leading international training workshops with field programs.
  • Providing team support, technical information, and assisting the Fisheries Strategy Lead with coordination of key fisheries projects in Priority projects in China, Peru, Chile, Micronesia, the Coral Triangle countries, Kenya, and the greater Caribbean.
  • Supporting strategy development, reporting and management of the Global Fisheries Strategy.
  • Working with fishermen and fishing communities, with internal and external scientists, and with seafood industries and NGO partners to enhance implementation of the Conservancy’s Global Fisheries Strategy.

While these are initial focal areas for the upcoming year, the content areas and tasks associated with this position will shift and expand over time.

The Fisheries Specialist/Applied Scientist III will be a position within the Conservancy’s Global Marine Team and will report to the Global Fisheries Strategy Lead. The base location for the position will be the TNC office located in Arlington, Virginia. The position will work closely with other Conservancy staff and partners located across the US, Latin America, Asia Pacific and Africa.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Master’s degree in fisheries science or related field and at least four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data on fisheries and fisheries performance as well as ecosystem interactions.
  • Established record of writing and presenting fisheries-related information.
  • Experience conducting or working on fisheries-related scientific research and fisheries management.
  • Experience leading complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.   
  • Experience leading and/or participating on cross-functional teams
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite Software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-6 years of experience working directly with fisheries, or with an NGO or an academic institution that carry out fisheries analyses.
  • Critical analytical thinking and excellent English writing skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of coral reef fisheries, related ecosystems, ecosystem processes, and their conservation needs preferred.
  • Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive and compelling reports and papers.
  • Deep knowledge of, and fluency in, fisheries science.
  • Familiarity and knowledge related to fisheries policy and practices.
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications relating to fisheries and related ecosystems, or ecosystem processes or related topics, desirable.
  • Experience in project management, including financial management, preferred.
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Web browsers) and ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work.
  • Fluency in Bahasa, Spanish, or Mandarin, a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Fisheries Specialist/Applied Scientist III may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  These conditions may:

  • require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
