Job Description:
DAI is seeking a Fisheries Expert for an anticipated USAID-funded Management of Aquatic Resources and Economic Alternatives (MAREA) project. The project will work to reduce threats posed by unsustainable fishing practices and coastal development by laying the foundation for access – rights mechanisms to achieve strengthened coastal and marine resources management and conservation in the region.

The Fisheries Expert will:
• Lead the implementation of fisheries activities within this Task Order, mainly focused on spiny lobster, groupers, queen conch, mangrove cockles fisheries with emphasis on the implementation of rights – based, market driven approaches;
• Lead the design and implementation of fisheries regional and national fisheries plans for target species using an ecosystem based approach;
• Lead the design and support the implementation of fisheries studies and assessments for target species;
• Provide technical assistance to local key stakeholders in aspects on fishery management;
• Promote the establishment of alliances with private and academic sectors for fisheries management and research for target species;
• Establish and promote joint collaboration and communication between ongoing and newly developed fisheries programs;
• Provide technical assistance for the development of policies, norms and regulations related to fisheries;
• Foster the lay out and implementation of rights-based and market – driven approaches to the sustainable management of coastal and marine resources;
• Provide technical support to consultants, sub-Contractors for successful program implementation;
• Design and lead the development of workshops, seminars and national and regional meetings and draft proceedings, reports and memoirs;
• Demonstrate extensive practical experience with fisheries assessments and other environmental related issues in Latin and Central America and / or the Caribbean;
• Demonstrate experience in assessing climate change impacts and designing projects that reduce those impacts;
• Work jointly with the endangered species conservation specialist, specially with shark related activities; and
• Excellent analytical, writing, communication, presentation, and training skills.

Basic Qualifications:
Education: At least M. Sc. degree in fisheries science; preferably a Ph. D.

Work Experience: Must have at least 10 years of practical work experience on fisheries management, preferably including queen conch, mangrove conch, and / or lobster fisheries work in Central or Latin America.

Supervisory Experience: Will supervise and oversee sub-Contractors, consultants and technical staff working in fisheries.
