POSITION SUMMARY
 

The Fisheries Scientist leads implementation of fisheries conservation strategies for the Mid-Atlantic region through collaborative partnerships with fishery stakeholders and managers and in coordination with diverse Conservancy staff in the Mid-Atlantic and North American Programs.
 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Fisheries Scientist helps to establish the Conservancy as a leading fisheries conservation partner within the Mid-Atlantic by forging key partnerships with fishermen, fisheries managers, and others to shape conservation priorities and short and long-term conservation strategies, and to identify and resolve technical issues for implementing ecosystem-based fisheries management. Programmatic scope will require cross-boundary work, relationship building, and communications. S/he develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address fishery conservation challenges.  The Fisheries Scientist conducts collaborative scientific research, documents results and develops proposals in order to advance sustainable fisheries in the Mid-Atlantic region.
 

 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 
  • Designs and implements collaborative research to address high priority fisheries conservation challenges.
  • Develops and sustains effective working relationship with key fisheries stakeholders.
  • Works with fishermen and fisheries managers to identify management solutions that simultaneously achieve conservation and fisheries goals.
  • Provides fieldwork and logistical support for research, project development and monitoring.   
  • May lead staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.                      
  • Assists with public and private fundraising sufficient to meet individual project needs.
  • May manage multiple grants, contracts or requests for proposals.                       
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Graduate Degree in fisheries science or related field and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Education, training, and/or experience with the principles of fishery biology, population dynamics, and marine ecology. 
  • Education, training, and/or experience with the process of how science is translated into fishery management decisions.                     
  • Experience managing workloads and finances under deadlines.                                     
  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information.        
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in fisheries science and management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in fisheries science, monitoring, policy and assessment in the Mid-Atlantic.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing or developing fisheries management plans, particularly via U.S. Fisheries Management Council and Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with reporting findings through peer-reviewed articles or other technical communications.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising and/or public and private grant writing.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, occasionally at sea, and under physically demanding circumstances.
