POSITION SUMMARY

TNC is initiating a number of exploratory activities in Japan to ascertain how TNC can add value to advancing conservation.

TNC and GR Japan seek a proven and dynamic professional to work with the GR Japan and the TNC team to design and implement a Fisheries Transparency Conference, scheduled for May 2017 in a manner that is consistent with TNC’s science-based, non-confrontational approach and constructively engages the multiple stakeholders concerned about fisheries and conservation in Japan. The Officer will also work with senior TNC leaders from the Asia Pacific Region and the Global Ocean Team along with our Japanese partners to support development of an overall programmatic strategy for TNC engagement in Japan.

This position will be hired by and housed in GR Japan for one year. Based on the Officer’s performance and the evolution of TNC’s program in Japan, this position may be transferred to a full time TNC position, working under the Direction of a TNC Japan Country Director. S/he would remain the main point of contact for TNC’s fisheries’ policy work in Japan which will be designed and put into practice mainly after the Conference.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Fisheries Officer’sinitial focus will be the successful implementation of the Fisheries Transparency Conference and follow-up activities.

The Fisheries Officer will be TNC’s in-country lead as we partner with Waseda University and Japan’s Fisheries Research and Education Agency to host a multi-stakeholder Conference to develop an approach and coalition for advancing Fisheries Transparency in Japan. TNC and its partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • In close coordination with GR Japan’s manager and TNC’s Ocean Governance Director, represent TNC’s interest in the country and further build relationships with the Government of Japan and its relevant line ministries; especially those ministries and agencies responsible for fisheries, ports and Japan’s imports; as well as with key Diet members.
  • In line with the IUU fishing policy strategy developed together with GR Japan and TNC, represent TNC’s interests and programmatic efforts with Japan-based NGOs, corporations, civil society organizations/ NGOs
  • Oversee initial start-up activities on fisheries transparency and IUU policy, post Conference, including development of a 12-month work plan in coordination with GR Japan and TNC.
  • In coordination with TNC, liaise with TNC marketing and communications staff in an effort to raise the profile of TNC’s Japan activities both internally and externally in Japan, Asia-Pacific and globally
  • Actively engage-providing technical inputs and process advice- with TNC Asia Pacific staff leading the development of an overall TNC Japan Strategy

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience, including proven experience in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related for-profit area, including demonstrated experience producing results and meeting program/department goals.
  • Technical skills with an emphasis on fisheries and ocean-related issues, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus. Demonstrated operational, implementation and detail-oriented perspective.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Japanese and English
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and practicing global literacy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High energy, forward thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards.Able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
  • Well organized and self-directed; politically savvy and a team player.
  • Successful experience in marketing or fund raising desired.
