Fisheries Monitoring Technical Manager
Marine Management Organisation (MMO)
Locations:   North East (Newcastle upon Tyne/ North Shields), South West (Penzance/ Plymouth)
Salary:           HEO £27,284-£31,546

SAFEGUARD A PROSPEROUS FISHING INDUSTRY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

Fishing provides billions of people with food, jobs and livelihoods. As the government organisation that licenses, regulates and plans marine activities in English waters, we have an important role to play in ensuring a prosperous fishing industry.

For years, the MMO has been working to manage a healthy marine environment and ecosystem, helping to protect and maintain fish stocks. Now, under the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), we’re putting greater emphasis on monitoring marine fisheries at the point of capture. And that’s where you come in.

As our Fisheries Monitoring Technical Manager, you’ll be part of the small, dedicated team delivering our monitoring programmes, helping to instil greater confidence that we’re doing all we can to ensure protect and preserve.

You’ll be instrumental in driving on-board technology and observation, ensuring that all catches are fully documented. To do so, you’ll oversee the installation and maintenance of Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) systems. And via landing obligation and catch documentation, you’ll also assess compliance, driving high standards within your team to ensure we meet with agreed target levels.

Of course, it’s essential that you bring a high level of expertise around monitoring solutions in fisheries, in the form of observers and technology. You’ll also bring a comprehensive knowledge of fisheries, fish-catching methods and catch quota trials, and a good understanding of the EU Common Fisheries Policy.

With advanced communication and networking skills, you’ll build strong working relationships across government departments and the fishing industry. Excellent IT skills, preferably including query coding, will be helpful. As will excellent project management skills, and the ability to manage a small geographically dispersed team, producing high quality results.

In no time at all, you’ll make a name for yourself as a key figure in protecting and maintaining the UK’s fish stocks.

Closing date: 23rd November 2014
