  • General Position Description: The Fish and Wildlife Technician assists the Ecosystem Leader in collection, recording and editing of fishery-dependent and independent data in the lower Laguna Madre ecosystem and other marine areas. Operates equipment safely and maintains gear, equipment and facility. Works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Working Conditions: (1) Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays as needed; (2) Required to work overtime as necessary; (3) Required to travel with possible overnight stays; (4) Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions; (5) Required to perform work in water-based field activities, including work aboard seagoing vessels; (6) Required to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.; (7) Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Education: Graduation from High School or GED. Acceptable Substitution: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in fisheries biology, marine biology or closely related field may be substituted for one year of required experience. Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university in fisheries biology, marine biology or closely related field.
    • Experience: Fish and Wildlife Technician I: No experience required. Fish and Wildlife Technician II: Four years relevant experience. Preferred Experience: Experience working on vessels in the Gulf of Mexico or other large bodies of water.
    • License/Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license. Note: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license. Preferred Licensure: United States Coast Guard (USCG) 100-ton Masters License.

    • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Fish and Wildlife Technician I: (1) Knowledge of common Texas marine organisms; (2) Knowledge of general office procedures; Fish and Wildlife Technician II: Knowledge of Fish and Wildlife Technician I; PLUS (3) Knowledge of basic fishery management practices, conservation laws and regulations; Fish and Wildlife Technician I: (4) Skill in effective verbal and written communication; (5) Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts; (6) Skill in using standard office equipment; (7) Skill in MS Word, Excel and Outlook; (8) Skill in operating and maintaining trucks, boats, outboard motors and trailers; Fish and Wildlife Technician II: Skill in Fish and Wildlife Technician I; PLUS (9) Skill in indentifying, researching and compiling information; (10) Skill in repair, maintenance and construction of specialized sampling equipment; (11) Skill in managing several projects simultaneously; Fish and Wildlife Technician I: (12) Ability to work as a member of a team; (13) Ability to collect and record data and maintain records; (14) Ability to learn to identify common marine organisms; (15) Ability to accurately follow instructions; (16) Ability to fully participate in field and water based sampling activities; (17) Ability to work under moderate supervision; (18) Ability to maintain accurate records and reports; (19) Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs; Fish and Wildlife Technician II: Ability of Fish and Wildlife Technician I; PLUS (20) Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities; (21) Ability to work independently with little or no supervision; (22) Ability to learn basic purchasing procedures; (23) Ability to prioritize tasks and schedules; (24) Ability to work independently with initiative and accomplish several tasks concurrently.
