The Rivers Trust (RT) is the umbrella organisation representing the rivers trust movement in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.  It works to support its members and to promote practical and sustainable solutions to environmental issues. River trusts are community group initiatives to look after local rivers. River trusts are now operating across the UK and are started by local people who care about their river. River trusts operate as charities for public benefit and concentrate on practical improvements for the whole river catchment. RT was formed in 2004 with 5 founder Trust members and now has over 40 active rivers trusts across England and Wales and works with over 100 catchment groups.

RT has been successful in winning major grant funded projects under the EU Life+ & Interreg IV Programmes and through Defra for river improvements, the Catchment Based Approach and environmental policy development based on the success of the rivers trust movement. As a result RT is increasingly involved in applying integrated catchment management and delivering Good Ecological Status under the EU Water Framework Directive.

RT is seeking to recruit an experienced person to succeed the current Secretary/Treasurer, who is due to retire in 2016, to lead Finance & Governance within the Trust. The person will work closely with the Board, the Chief Executive and its small Executive Team in running and developing the Trust. The job provides a great opportunity for an energetic, enthusiastic and experienced professional to make a real difference to a growing environmental charity and river improvements across the UK and elsewhere.

Responsibilities

  1. Leading and advising RT and the rivers trust movement on Governance and Business issues.
  2. Leading the Finance function for RT and its trading subsidiary.
  3. Supporting the Executive Team on project delivery, including direct involvement in managing the EU Life IP project and others from time to time.
  4.  Supporting the Board and the Chief Executive on the general management and development of RT and its trading subsidiary, including project bids, events and other activities and commercial opportunities.

The successful candidate will be required to manage the small Finance Team, which is based at Rain-Charm House and, as typical of many small organisations, be hands-on, versatile and to adopt a flexible working approach.  In return the Trust is prepared to be flexible by offering a range of duties/responsibilities and opportunities, depending on experience, qualifications and personal ambition. The Trust would also be prepared to consider flexible working hours (e.g. 4 days/week) and remote working.

The post will require regular travel in the UK and some travel elsewhere in Europe from time to time.
