Description

Mauritian Wildlife Foundation has a track record of successful translocations of endangered endemic bird species, and for the coming season, a new translocation is planned for the Mauritius Fody. The Mauritius Fody is one of the rarest Passerines in Mauritius, and the long-term aim of the Recovery Programme is to reduce the extinction risk of this charismatic species, through the establishment of self-sustainable subpopulations on predator-free offshore islets. The project is now seeking motivated candidates to assist in the translocation, releases and post-release monitoring of Mauritius Fodies on Round Island.

Main duties
• Assist in transportation of birds on boats, jeeps and helicopters
• Assist in captive husbandry of an endangered species
• Assist in bird releases and carry out post-release monitoring
• Prepare and administer supplementary feed
• Monitor survival, habitat use, feeding and social behaviour of released birds
• Collect data on seed dispersal by birds and invertebrate abundance
• Data entry and record keeping
• Report to the Project Coordinator

Additional duties
• Provide help to the Round Island wardens in general maintenance and warden duties
• Maintain equipment and release aviaries on site
• Provide support to the Mauritius Fody Team on Ile aux Aigrettes

A successful candidate will have a degree in Biology or related subject, and some previous field work experience; experience of different ecological survey techniques is preferable. Bird-handling skills are desirable. Previous experience from working with Passrines would be an advantage. We are seeking self-motivated team workers, who are also able to work independently and unsupervised; problem-solving skills are essential, as well as patience and flexibility. The job requires a good level of fitness, and an ability to withstand stressful situations and to live and work in a small group of people, in an isolated location. An ability to tolerate hot climates is necessary, and preferably demonstrated by previous field work experience in the tropics. A driving licence is essential, First Aid qualification is desired. Basic French would be an advantage.

Successful candidates will be provided with airfares to Mauritius, transport while in Mauritius, accommodation, permits, and a basic health insurance. These positions are paid, and a food allowance is provided for periods in the field.
