Description

Field researcher required from 12th July to 26th August inclusive, to assist in sub-arctic field work, in Alaskan Wilderness. Must be experienced in crossing fast-flowing rivers, walking long distances and preferably in hiking up mountains. Previous experience in hydrolgical field work preferable, but not essential.

Work will involve measuring river velocity, river depth and channel width at several locations throughout a glacial catchment. Water samples will also be taken for nutrient analysis. Channel discharge will be high, and this work may involve making river crossings, so applicants should be experienced in this. Many measurements will be made daily, for 6 weeks. Several excursions to the headwater glaciers will be undertaken, where camping will be necessary.  Bears and other wildlife are not uncommon in this wilderness environment, and applicants should be prepared for encounters. Applicants will be expected to assist in deliverence of seminars and talks to the public and National Park Staff throughout the 6 weeks.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in hydrological studies, nutrient science and seminar preparation and delivery. Accommodation will be provided, but applicants must be able to pay for their own food and transport.

As field work begins on 12th July, applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
