Field Organizing Manager

More information about this job:

Overview:

Greenpeace’s field organizers are currently taking on some of the most exciting, community-based work in the organization’s recent history.  They’re building deep relationships with local partners and pushing themselves and Greenpeace’s campaigns to be oriented toward a just and sustainable future for our communities, climate, oceans, and forests.  We ask our organizers to balance the demands of working for a global environmental organization (that doesn’t always get it right) with the best practices of being a committed, mindful, and reciprocal member of a local community.  They strategize and develop ambitious and innovative campaign arcs and also implement the day to day work of recruiting volunteers, working with partners, building Greenpeace’s profile in local and regional media, and building and leveraging relationships with elected officials and decision-makers.

Our organizing managers directly oversee a team of field organizers.  A good organizing manager is interested not only in results on the ground, but in the development of their staff as organizers, strategists, negotiators, trainers, media spokespeople, and every other critical role on an campaign team.  They are also excellent project coordinators, able to effectively use a variety of means to communicate, get and keep folks on the same page, and bring multiple strands of work together for powerful campaigning.

Organizing managers aren’t just overseeing organizing work -- they’re also doing it.  Seattle is a critical location for three of our campaigns.  We’re fighting to protect the Arctic from risky and dangerous oil drilling, working to halt the export of Powder River Basin coal through ports in Washington and Oregon, and working to protect the Bering Sea Canyons.  The Seattle-based organizing manager will have a direct role in these campaigns, as well as a staff-management role.

The best candidate for this position will be an experienced organizer, a great listener, a strategic campaign planner. This person will have some staff management experience and be excited to develop their skills. This person will be adept at working and coordinating with a variety of departments and people, especially with members of our Campaigns, Actions, Online and Communications departments.  The best candidate will be able to manage, mentor, motivate, and train both new and experienced organizers

Responsibilities:

-          Train and supervise a team of 2-5 field organizers

-          Oversee the planning and implementation of field campaigns on every level including overall strategy, grassroots tactics, media, coalition building, lobbying, and others

-          Conduct site visits with organizers and regular planning meetings, as well as attend interdepartmental planning and coordination meetings

-          Spend a significant percentage of time directly organizing

-          Work closely with other members of the Grassroots, Campaigns, Communications, Online, and Actions departments

-          Coordinate regional and national projects involving the field team

-          Create and run teamwide trainings, develop, improve, and manage data and tracking systems, and play a large role shaping the development of the team

-          Other duties as assigned

-      Work with field team staff to fulfill the following responsibilities:

-          Develop sophisticated, community-based campaigns on Greenpeace issues

-          Create widespread public support by recruiting and training campaign volunteers

-          Develop knowledge and strategic analysis on Greenpeace issues

-          Collaborate with and mobilize constituent groups, including local, environmental justice, labor, and civic organizations

-          Plan and execute events

-          Generate significant media coverage on Greenpeace campaigns

-          Build long-term relationships with the public, coalition partners, the media, and campaign targets

Qualifications:

-          Commitment to grassroots organizing as a means of affecting change

-          Three years of field organizing or campaigning experience

-       Demonstrated experience in, or potential to lean staff management skills

-          Proven success planning strategic campaigns, working in coalition, generating media coverage, and recruiting and developing volunteers

-          Project management and oversight from conception to completion

-          Experience effectively working with diverse groups of people with different identities, motivations and objectives

-          Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team

-          Experience using databases to manage volunteers and contacts, and familiarity with social networks as organizing tools

-          Experience working under tight deadlines

-          Ability to travel regularly

-          While prior experience in environmental advocacy is not required, an ideal candidate has a track record of using innovative social justice strategies to win against a corporate target and/or to pressure a decision-maker

Location:  The position will be based in Seattle through 2017.  There is a possibility that this position will be reassigned to a Greenpeace hub office, or other location past that time.
