Description
You: A passionate grassroots organizer. In the United States, coal is public enemy #1 when it comes to clean air, healthy communities, and a stable climate. In the Pacific Northwest, Greenpeace’s efforts will focus on working with communities to block the efforts of corporations to export coal from the United States, via ports in Oregon and Washington, to international markets.

You’re ready to protect our communities in the Northwest and our global climate by taking on the biggest, most evil companies in the world and stopping them in their tracks.  You’re also prepared to jump in and support Greenpeace campaigns to save our oceans and forests and to protect our communities from toxic pollution and the risks of nuclear energy. You want a job working alongside communities to hold politicians and corporate polluters accountable to the decisions that affect us all.  And you’re ready to start.

Us: Greenpeace was founded in 1971 by a small group of activists standing up to nuclear testing off the Alaskan Coast. These daring few effectively won a total ban on nuclear testing and launched Greenpeace’s legacy of “bearing witness” to environmental abuse. We continue to use non-violent direct action, creative confrontation, and grassroots organizing to build solutions to global warming, toxic pollution, the threat of nuclear energy expansion, and destruction of our ancient forests and oceans. Today, Greenpeace has 2.5 million members in 40 countries, and continues to lead the way to a clean and peaceful planet.

Job Scope and Responsibilities

A Greenpeace Field Organizer is passionate, driven, strategic, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. You can quickly and effectively inspire communities to demand change — from grocery chains selling threatened fish species to shoe companies sourcing their leather from cattle ranchers who clear-cut tropical forest. You work with local citizens and groups to challenge decision-makers to make local chemical plants safer and to expose the polluter lobbyists who are undermining science-based climate legislation.  You are happy wearing a suit to a morning lobby meeting with key allies and a local member of Congress, only to get paint on an old pair of jeans that evening while painting a banner with local volunteers.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead Greenpeace’s effort in the Pacific Northwest to block coal exports while balancing the demands of work for our oceans, forests, and other priority campaigns
  • Build lasting relationships with a variety of strategic allies
  • Recruit, train, and maintain a base of volunteer activists building power on your campaigns
  • Plan and execute education and outreach events
  • Generate media coverage on Greenpeace issues
  • Build relationships with elected officials to ensure long-term action
  • Quickly develop knowledge of Greenpeace issues
  • Other responsibilities as required by the Field Organizing Director

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of grassroots organizing experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills - written and oral
  • Critical thinking and time-management skills
  • Commitment to grassroots organizing and non-violent direct action as a means of effecting change
  • BA/BS Degree or equivalent experience preferred

Salary: $37,928.38 per annum, plus generous benefits

Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have local relationships and experience in the Portland region.

Please note that Greenpeace Organizers have in the past been asked to relocate to adjust to changing campaign needs on rare occasions, but we expect Portland to continue to be a long-term position.
