The Rainforest Alliance’s TREES (Training, Extension, Enterprises and Sourcing) program promotes sustainable livelihoods and protects biodiversity in forest-dependent communities. We work to enhance the competitiveness of community and indigenous forestry enterprises by building business skills, increasing efficiencies, and facilitating investment in value-added processing, expanding income opportunities from wood and non-wood forest products and environmental services, and increasing access to local and global markets through Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. 

Position Summary: 

The Field Coordinator will be the primary liaison between the FCCA project clients/communities and the TREES FCCA project and will be responsible for facilitating field implementation of all technical support to clients. S/he will guide the TREES staff’s efforts to ensure the communities implement and benefit from sustainable forest management at the community level and gain increased access to markets for sustainable forest products and carbon. S/he will work with other members of the TREES program to increase community capacity for communication with government authorities, technical service providers, potential investors and the private sector at the local level to ensure full engagement in value-added processing for wood and non-timber forest products and carbon financing initiatives through the Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) mechanism.

Project: 

The Forest, Climate & Community Alliance (FCCA) project -- supported by USAID’s Global Development Alliance (GDA) and NORAD and implemented by the Rainforest  Alliance aims to increase the ability of communities to manage forests more sustainably and to position themselves to respond to the rapidly developing marketplace for forest-based carbon offsets. Working with a range of local and national partners in Ghana, FCCA  promotes both sustainable community-based forest management and enterprise developement. At the same time, the project aims to contribute to Ghana’s R-PP multi-stakeholder consultative processto establish the foundation for local communities to maximize the benefits from forest carbon finance based on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD).

Responsibilties: 
  • Coordinate with local level stakeholders in the evaluation and selection of pilot sites guided by the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) and Readiness Plan (R-Plan) processes;
  • Communicate with other TREES staff in Ghana, and coordinate activities at the community level;
  • Facilitate community participation and mobilization for project implementation;
  • Prepare for organizational strengthening and business skills training sessions with participating communities and Community Based Forest Enterprises (CBFEs);
  • Organize and facilitate community level training events on benefits of increased access to forest resources, sustainable forest management practices, and production processes, with an emphasis on appropriate value-added technologies and non-traditional species which can reduce pressure on over-harvested species;
  • Support project monitoring and evaluation (M&E) reporting and technical delivery requirements;
  • In conjunction with District Assemblies, Forest Services Division (FSD) of Forestry Commission and traditional authorities, facilitate the development of district level sustainable land use management plans and guidelines to guide community forest management;
  • Document and share information quarterly, particularly regarding cases with the most significant change which can contribute to  periodic success stories and lessons learned;
  • Provide inputs for the development of audio-visual and printed training and guidance material from  project implementation for broader sharing;
  • Participate in project planning, strategic development and review activities, and produce reports as required;
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete project activities; negotiating and contracting with vendors; assisting with budget development; and assisting with fundraising as appropriate; and
  • Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Degree in Forestry, Agriculture or related field required, with extensive experience in community development work; Advanced degree preferred;
  • Minimum of 4 years field experience in renewable natural resources management, experience with an NGO preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in rural development directly involving community organizations and/or assisting small rural producers;
  • Familiarity with national forestry policies; land, forest and tree tenure issues, and national forestry initiatives in Ghana;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Knowledge of and extensive experience working in the high forest areas of the Western Region;
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint);
  • Ability to effectively engage a wide range of stakeholders at the local level; and
  • Ability to ride a motorbike in rough terrains up to 90 percent of your time in high-forest areas.
