Job Title:                          PPG Field Coordinator Gabon

Site:                                   Plateau Bateke NP (Gabon)

Supervisor:                        Aspinall Foundation Regional Director for Congo and Gabon

Language:                          The candidate must be fluent in French and English.

Role : The PPG Field Coordinator Gabon will be responsible for the organization of field teams and conservation activities in Plateau Bateke NP (Gabon)

TAF has been working in Gabon since 1998, funding and managing a western lowland gorilla rehabilitation and reintroduction project in the Batéké Plateau National Park (Projet Protection des Gorilles (PPG, Gabon)) and has been working in close collaboration with the Gabonese Government to ensure the protection of the national park since its creation in 2002. In Gabon, the main actions to achieve this objective are:                                 

1. Law enforcement against illegal bushmeat trade;

2. Management of a gorilla introduction program in the BPNP; and,

3. Monitoring surveys of wildlife and human pressure.

 

Primary Responsibilities:      The PPG Field Coordinator for Gabon will have the following principle responsibilities:

 

  • Assure the coordination of field teams and their activities with the office in Franceville (Gabon)
  • Assure that logistics are properly organized with the office in Franceville, and that all field equipment is properly maintained.
  • Reinforce the capacity of PPG field team in Gabon to monitor and protect the gorillas which have been reintroduced to each site.
  • Collaborate with the host country national agency responsible for anti-poaching to ensure that the sites are adequately protected.
  • Write monthly administrative and technical reports to summarize field activities in the reserve.
  • Ensure gorilla monitoring with photographic traps, and the collection and processing of data.
  • Ensure monitoring by Phenological circuit as well as to the synthesis of data.

 

Principal tasks and responsabilities

 

1. General management of the site

  • Coordinate proper maintenance of field equipment, vehicles (including boats, outboard motors, quads, generators and so forth) and field sites.
  • Promote a safe environment for the gorillas, as well as staff and visitors.
  • Manage inventories of equipment, fuel and spare parts for each site.
  • Assure proper monitoring of the fauna of both sites, with an emphasis on great apes.
  • Contribute to research and monitoring activities within and around the protected areas.

 

  2. Staff Management

  • Coordinate management, training and evaluation of staff.
  • Organise work programs for staff, including proper rest periods and annual leave.
  • Ensure that field staff understands any risks linked to working with wildlife, and are prepared to respond quickly and efficiently in the event of an emergency.
  • Assure that the staff treat visitors and other staff members with respect, and promote team unity under all circumstances.
  • Inform the TAF Regional Director for Congo and Gabon of any issues with staff related to discipline, sickness or injuries, special leave or holiday needs, etc.

 

3. Finance

  • Produce annual or specific-themed budgets, as required by TAF.
  • Produce monthly accounting summaries for all field expenses at each site.

 

4. Limits of Authority

  • Inform the TAF Regional Director for Congo and Gabon of any instance where staff require formal sanctions, regardless of the severity.
  • Inform the TAF Regional Director for Congo and Gabon prior to making any significant purchases.
  • Secure authorization from the TAF Regional Director for Congo and Gabon prior to recruiting any personnel, either full-time or temporary.
  • Secure authorization from the TAF Regional Director for Congo and Gabon prior to making arrangements for annual leave or other holidays.
  • Inform the TAF Director for Overseas Projects of any instance where a directive from the TAF Regional Director for Congo and Gabon can or will not be implemented.
