  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  The Field Biologist will be based in the Hailey office but will work in the field in the Southern Pioneer Mountains and other locations is southern Idaho. This region has been identified by The Nature Conservancy as high-priority sites for the conservation of sagebrush-steppe ecosystems and the Field Biologist will be responsible for collecting a diversity of field data on these systems. This work is expected to begin mid-May and conclude by the end of September. Rigorous outdoor activities in remote areas and some overnight camping will be required.  A vehicle will be provided for travel to and from the field and must have valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate’s degree in natural resources, environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months to 1 year of experience.  Previous field experience in sampling rangeland vegetation desirable.
• Coordinating information from multiple sources into databases including data entry and report production.
• Completing tasks independently within assigned timeframes.
• Managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
• Performing administrative duties emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks.
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.
• Experience with GIS (e.g., ArcView, ArcGIS) and especially mobile GIS/GPS (e.g., ArcPad) software desirable.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
• Experience identifying Great Basin flora required.
• Familiarity with southern Idaho, ecology of sagebrush-steppe environments desirable.
• Experience in orienteering skills, including the use of topographic maps, aerial photographs, and global positioning systems (GPS).
  ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • Conducting surveys of vegetation and other parameters at shrub-steppe plots according to an established protocol.
• Assist with location and establishment of field plots.
• Collect data necessary to establish the condition of rangeland sites. Includes identifying and estimating abundance of grasses/forbs/shrubs, estimating biomass production and utilization, estimating canopy and ground cover, evaluating soil erosion, and other necessary measures.
• May work with local land managers and other field staff to identify and obtain other existing rangeland assessment and monitoring data.
• Enter data and assist with data quality control and data management.
• Perform some data summarization and analysis.
• Perform miscellaneous office tasks (e.g., organize and maintain equipment).

• Resolves routine issues independently.
• Develops resolution plans with supervisor for unusual or complex issues.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
• Works under remote supervision and receives specific and detailed instructions for required tasks and results expected.
• Addresses issues with supervisor that affect others’ work or the overall program.
• Consults supervisor on unspecified or unusual issues.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• Maintains project records.
• May perform financial and administrative tasks related to project.
• Purchase equipment and supplies with supervisor as provided for in budget.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
• Formulate ideas and communicate clearly with others, both orally and in written form.
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff, and others, providing and obtaining needed information.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Field Biologist may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  These conditions may:
• require minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• present occasional possibility of injury
• require long hours in isolated settings
