Description

National Bats and Wind Turbine Project: Field Officers to work with trained search dogs

Four positions across the UK
Fixed term contract for 3 months, beginning mid July 2011.

We are seeking to appoint four enthusiastic field officers to work on a project investigating the effects of wind turbines on bats in the UK. Although significant mortality in bats at wind farms has been reported in the USA and continental Europe, it is currently unclear whether similar problems occur in the UK. This project will provide field staff with a unique opportunity to learn to work with search dogs to detect bat carcasses. It is essential that applicants possess a full driving licence, are flexible about their location, and are available to begin work in mid-July.

Salary: £18,718 - £19,822 per annum, depending on skills and experience
Closing date 17/6/2011. Interview dates (to include 2-day dog handling course where accommodation will be provided) in week commencing 27/6/2011.

The successful applicants will work with Dr Fiona Mathews and her team, in close collaboration with Prof. David Hosken. They must be enthusiastic about ecological research and enjoy working outdoors whatever the weather. They will ideally have had previous experience of working with search dogs or be familiar with operating automated acoustic detectors for bats. It is essential that the applicants are flexible about their location during the field season (July-October) as they will be required to travel between field sites frequently. It is anticipated that one field worker will be recruited to work in each of the following regions: southern England, northern England, Scotland and Wales. The field staff will be expected to care for their allocated search dog during their period of employment, and will be provided with a suitable van for transporting their dog. A full driving licence is essential, as is an ability to organise logistical arrangements. The project will involve liaising with a range of people including landowners, engineers, turbine operators, and members of the public, and successful applicants will therefore be outgoing and with a proven record of effective communication. The majority of the field work will be conducted alone, and therefore applicants must be confident with this working pattern.

The University of Exeter is an equal opportunity employer which is 'Positive About Disabled People': if you have a disability, you should mention this in your application. Whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented in the workforce.
