Temporary Job Announcement – 2014-2015

The Peregrine Fund (TPF) will be awarding a temporary position for a field assistant to work on Golden Eagle studies occurring on The U.S. Department of Defense White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in southern New Mexico. The term of the field assistant position will commence around 1 January 2015 and last approximately 6 weeks. As part of an ongoing study to understand Golden Eagle distribution on WSMR, the field assistant will work with TPF researchers to: 1) develop and conduct repeatable nesting territory occupancy surveys based on data previously collected during nest inventory flights, 2) continue power line surveys (as scheduling permits) to document Golden Eagle locations on and near WSMR power grid structures, and 3), conduct, if possible, nest inventory flights on San Andreas National Wildlife Refuge (SANWR) through coordination with WSMR Environmental, SANWR, and Army Air.

As a temporary employee you will receive a check every two weeks for $1360.00 less tax withholding. Field housing and vehicle will be provided. The Fund will also supply a spotting scope and tripod which must be returned to the Fund at the completion of the study. The person receiving the position will be responsible for their own food.

Temporary positions will be issued only to those over 18 years old. Some ornithological or other wildlife experience is desirable, especially with nesting raptor surveys/monitoring. The applicant will be required to make careful observations, from 400+ meters, of eagles at territories and for up to four hours at a time, work independently periodically, take concise and accurate notes, maintain daily data sheets, and work and communicate well with others. Prior experience working on Department of Defense installations is desired; the successful applicant will need to provide WSMR security with information to obtain security clearance to work on Range. Familiarity with GPS receiving equipment and the operation a four-wheel drive vehicles is a plus. The study area is primarily rugged montane country and will require knowledge of working outdoors in winter in this environment and thus requiring applicants to be in good physical condition. The position will be issued only to persons possessing such qualifications.

All positions will require long, challenging hours. The short time in which the study can be completed and the remote locations preclude "time off" unless arrangements are made in advance. No pets will be allowed. Due to insurance and security requirements, only Peregrine Fund employees with WSMR security clearance will be allowed in the study area.

Please send a resume and cover letter with references as soon as possible to the address listed below, or preferably by e-mail to tpf@peregrinefund.org. If you are e-mailing your request please include your full mailing address. Resumes and cover letters must be received by 20 November 2014. The applicant receiving temporary position will be notified by November 30, or sooner.
