Description

The International Council on Clean Transportation has a fellowship opportunity in its San Francisco, CA office to work in our Roadmap program. The goal of the Roadmap Program is to guide nations in their efforts to achieve substantial reductions in emissions from the transportation sector. We plan to achieve this goal by building consensus among global transportation policy makers on near-term milestones supporting GHG/fuel efficiency standards, adoption of electric drive vehicles, low carbon fuels, mode shift, activity reduction, and vehicle emissions standards, to stabilize global CO2 concentrations at 450 ppm or less, and to reduce health impacts from transportation. The program relies on a spreadsheet-based model that estimates transportation emissions to 2050 by country and mode for multiple scenarios. The model serves as the main tool to assist key partners and agencies with transportation emissions calculation models, methods and data, and to develop reports and presentations that assess the effects of different policies on transportation emissions.

The specific activities of this fellowship will be to: (1) develop reports that highlight the effects of different transportation policies on emissions in different countries; (2) improve model functionality and interface; (3) compare model parameters, algorithms and results with those from other global and national models; (4) update and validate transportation data; (5) support the public release of the second version of the model; (6) support the creation of benchmark and ranking systems that will enable country comparisons with regards to the energy efficiency of their transportation systems; and (7) support the creation of presentation and outreach materials to key stakeholders in different countries. To allow for flexibility in the fellowship, the specific tasks assigned to the fellow will be dependent on the candidate’s qualifications and interests.

Qualifications

  • Excellent understanding of transportation emission calculation methods, and familiarity with transportation data sources;
  • Advanced MS Excel skills;
  • Excellent research, analytic, quantitative, and writing skills;
  • Proficiency in English;
  • Master’s or PhD candidate level, and relevant work experience.

Position details

The fellowship is expected to start as soon as possible and will last through the end of 2012. The fellow is expected to work a minimum of 20 hours a week. The fellowship pay will commensurate with experience. Our office is located in downtown San Francisco near the Montgomery BART/Muni station.
