Position reports to: Climate and Energy Project Director
Position Location: Washington, DC
Friends of the Earth U.S. is fighting to defend the environment and create a more healthy and just world. We're hard-hitting, progressive environmental advocates that pull no punches and speak sometimes uncomfortable truth to power. It's an approach that has worked for four decades to produce important victories that have protected our planet and its people. We’re part of Friends of the Earth International, a federation of groups working in 76 countries on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues.
In accomplishing our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world values people and the environment. We are focused on reforming economic drivers such as tax or trade policy that are often used to empower corporations and government to harm the environment.
Our current campaigns focus on clean energy and solutions to global warming, protecting people from toxic and new, potentially harmful technologies, and promoting smarter, low-pollution transportation alternatives. We are seeking to hire a talented and dedicated individual to augment our efforts to stop the use of dirty fuels such as tar sands and liquid coal. The position will:
- Develop strategic campaign and communications strategies in conjunction with the Climate and Energy Project Director, Communications Director and Online Communications Manager;
- Implementing an activist strategy that raises the profile and increases the public pressure around priority issues
- Conduct and oversee research and analysis to develop reports and articles to educate non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and the public;
- Develop public education and campaign materials on tar sands and other dirty fuels and global warming issues;
- Educate members of Congress, the administration, opinion leaders, and the media about dirty fuels and global warming issues;
- Reach out to groups and activists within the environmental community and beyond to build a diverse coalition focused on stopping the expansion of dirty fuels;
- Work with the Climate and Energy Project Director to develop and implement a fundraising plan.
Requirements and Special Knowledge
The position requires a college degree (BA/BS) or equivalent, a demonstrated commitment to the environment, an appreciation of Friends of the Earth’s role in the environmental movement and knowledge of climate change policy. Some experience in policy advocacy, or on fuels issues at the federal or state level is strongly preferred. Knowledge and experience with the legislative process is also preferred.
The ideal candidate will have a strategic approach to both policy and politics, and a desire to have a major impact on federal policy debates through hard-hitting advocacy. The successful candidate will have the ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, convening/organizing, policy development, and research, as well as the ability to oversee consultants, and coordinate media and development staff. The successful candidate will have the ability to work in coordination with a dedicated and passionate team of domestic staff as well as with a diverse group of coalition partners. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
