Description
  • 18 month Scottish Wildlife Trust Training Programme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund - Skills for the Future Programme

Bursary: £12.5k per annum pro rata

Base Location: Edinburgh (with travel throughout Scotland)

At the forefront of wildlife conservation in Scotland, with over 35,000 members, we have an amazing network of wildlife reserves and conduct an impressive range of practical conservation projects and environmental campaigns.

Building on the success of our training programme in 2011/12, HLF has granted additional funds to offer another exciting opportunity for highly motivated individuals, who have a strong desire to forge a career in ecological surveying and work towards a matching SQA Professional Development Award.

This training is designed to focus on practical learning in the field and successful applicants will be expected to attend at least 35 hours per week.  Some evenings and weekend working and completing field surveys in all weathers is expected. It will offer great opportunities to experience working on some of the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s wonderful nature reserves and to train with the best experts in their field on a variety of habitats and species, whilst carrying out topical case studies and projects.

The programme has been developed because of a well recognised continued shortage in highly skilled ecological surveyors and will benefit from a wealth of specialist knowledge and experience from within the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s staff, as well as from the expertise and strong support from senior management.  Successful applicants will benefit from a tried and tested purpose-built training that aims to bring out the very best, in what we believe, will be the best field ecologists in the future in Scotland.

Applicants are likely to hold a degree or a matched vocational qualification in a relevant discipline. Experience in ecological survey will be an advantage. We are especially looking for strong characters that would have the potential to set up their own business or become self-employed in this field in the future. Previous experience and skills in communications, presentation, business, report writing and field survey as well as ecological knowledge will all be useful. If candidates don't already hold a full driving licence they will be expected to gain one during the programme to ensure they are ready for a surveying role.
