The Australian Institute of Marine Science is the leading national organisation researching tropical marine ecosystems. The Institute has world-class laboratory facilities in Townsville Queensland, Perth Western Australia and Darwin Northern Territory, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support. Facilities are being enhanced with $55M of capital funds from the Australian Government. This will include a state-of-the-art experimental ocean simulator in an extensive seawater precinct to support innovative research into coral spawning, water quality and climate change.

An exceptional opportunity exists for an Experimental Scientist to work within our Water Quality and Climate Change teams and take an active role in the laboratory and field work requirements for the group. Our scientists are currently undertaking extensive studies on the effects of ocean acidification on coral reefs, and are also investigating the responses of the GBR to the interactive effects of water quality and climate change.

The successful candidate will coordinate the field work and contribute to laboratory experiments on behalf of the group and must be experienced in safe field and laboratory practices, running aquarium experiments and scientific data management. The position involves significant field work in the Great Barrier Reef and Papua New Guinea. Tertiary qualifications in Marine Science, field work experience and diving and boating qualifications are essential.

This position will be based at our Cape Ferguson Research Facility in Townsville, Queensland and is available for a fixed term of two years. Attractive working conditions apply including a commencing salary of $54,247 - $68,008 plus superannuation, generous leave, commuter car transportation to site and many other benefits.
