Description

Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve within the Kalahari/Namibia is not only home to the incredible large wildlife but also the variety of insect species is fantastic. We are interested in insects that occur during the rain season. In this project we collect and identify specimens to the familiy level and  preserve them on entomological boards. There are many different techniques that can be employed to collect insects ranging from pitfall traps to the use of pooters, collecting nets, light and malaise traps. While in the field, research volunteers have of course the great opportunity to also see larger wildlife that naturally surrounds us. For the insects, we collaborate with natural history museums who help us identify specimens to the genus and species level and there are some good chances of new species discoveries.
Furthermore we would like to have a deeper look at the symbiosis between ant and Acacia tree species, being a partner with Reading University. For this we sample swollen thorns of trees the ants live in and identify the contents.

BRinK requires a written proposal to outline your ideas of collection methods, so that upon your arrival we can start with the field work straight away. Running a project with BRinK greatly enhances your field research experience and CV. You will obtain a certificate that shows the experience and expertise you gained during the project. Apply soon - placements are limited.
