Position Announcement – Executive Director

The mission of Alachua Conservation Trust, Inc. is to protect the natural, historic, scenic, and recreational resources of north central Florida. Since 1988, ACT has acquired and managed conservation land, negotiated for the purchase of public parks, provided leadership in voter referenda, accepted private conservation easements, and restored historic buildings. ACT also conducts environmental education programs, is developing an eco-lodge, and owns a green cemetery.

 

Position Overview:

The Executive Director is responsible for the professional management of this nationally accredited land trust, and reports to the 12-member volunteer Board of Directors, who meet monthly. The Executive Director manages a staff of 3-5 professionals, and numerous volunteers and laborers. The position is full-time, and on-site residency is available (but not required).

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership and Direction: (30%)

  • Work with the Board and staff to implement ACT’s strategic plans for organizational development and land conservation.
  • Be accountable for achieving ACT’s conservation and financial goals.
  • Exercise management responsibility for implementing the policies and programs approved by the ACT’s board of directors.
  • Partner with other organizations and governmental agencies to further conservation goals.

 

Fundraising: (30%)

  • Develop and lead an effective, active program to raise funds for operations and programs
  • Maintain positive relations with donors, including individuals, foundations, and public agencies.
  • Implement major gifts cultivation program.
  • Coordinate regional fundraising events.
  • Coordinate local, project-based fundraising campaigns.
  • Supervise the maintenance of ACT’s donor and prospect database and expand and track prospect lists.
  • Supervise annual and planned giving campaigns to donors and prospects.

 

Administration: (25%)

  • Oversee ACT’s legal, financial, and record keeping systems to ensure they meet LTA accreditation standards.
  • Prepare ACT’s annual budget and with assistance of ACT’s Treasurer and accountants, provide timely reports of the financial position to the Board.
  • Oversee and manage staff support of and communications to Board.
  • Assist with Board development and recruitment.
  • Monitor other ACT activities and provide timely reports to the Board.
  • Supervise, hire, evaluate, and ensure training of all staff in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Support the operation of Board Committees in the conduct of ACT’s activities.

 

Public Relations: (15%)

  • Promote awareness of and support for ACT’s mission.
  • Oversee the release of all ACT publications, press releases, and electronic/social media.
  • Edit and oversee publication of ACT’s newsletter, annual report, and other documents.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s and/or graduate degrees in public policy, natural sciences, resource management, business, planning, or other relevant fields desired.
  • Proven success at creating and/or implementing fundraising campaigns; including major gift solicitations and planned giving.
  • Two or more years of experience leading or managing not-for-profit or advocacy organization, or other comparable program or campaign.
  • Dynamic leadership style, results oriented, demonstrated goals achievement, strong public speaking skills.
  • Experience with grant-writing and fundraising from charitable foundations; familiar with resources to identify potential grantors.
  • Understanding of land conservation options, real estate transactions, estate planning, and other relevant legal matters desired.
  • Commitment to environmental and conservation goals.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating large events or programs desired.
  • Valid driver’s license and ownership of reliable vehicle required.
  • Willingness to work weekends and evening events is required.

 

Compensation:

  • Salary range —$40,000 - $60,000 commensurate with experience and background.
  • Staff residence may be available; not required
  • Reimbursement towards private health insurance
  • Flexible work schedule and vacations

 

Transition:

This hiring is part of a transition plan; the current Executive Director will remain with the organization as board member or development director to assist with the transition to the incoming Executive Director.
