EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Background

Over the past three years, many of the major organizations in the conservation and environmental community inAlaskahave met and held a series of discussions aimed at strengthening the environmental movement inAlaska.   Now, three of those groups –AlaskaCenterfor the Environment, Alaska Conservation Alliance and Alaska Youth for Environmental Action – have merged to create a new organization.  The new group will:

  • Coordinate the creation of a statewide conservation strategy and convene other organizations to create and implement that strategy.
  • Build new leaders for the conservation movement and give existing leaders the tools and support to sustain them in their work.
  • Engage and influence policy makers at all levels of government and increase citizen involvement in support of the statewide conservation strategy andAlaskaenvironmental and conservation causes in general.

The new organization is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit and is closely tied with a 501 (c) (4) organization, Alaska Conservation Voters and its Political Activity Fund.  ACV carries out issue advocacy, lobbying and electoral activities by:

  • Training and promoting pro-conservation candidates,
  • Mobilizing conservation voters for key races,
  • Educating voters about the activities of the legislature, and
  • Lobbying members of the legislature and local elected officials.

The Executive Director will lead both the 501 (c) (3) and the 501 (c) (4) organizations and reports to both boards of directors.  The organizations will share staff and expenses to fulfill the missions of both organizations.

 

Job Description of the Executive Director

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the organizations’ strategic plans;
  • In concert with other organizations, create and implement a statewide conservation strategy;
  • Build new leadership and strengthen existing leadership in the environmental and conservation community;
  • Engage and influence policy makers at all levels of government in cooperation with other groups in theAlaskaenvironmental and conservation community;
  • Develop and implement a robust electoral program;
  • Establish a close working relationship with both Boards of Directors;
  • Develop for each board’s approval, annual budgets for each organization;
  • Create and implement a development plan to raise necessary funds to achieve the missions of both organizations;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with foundations, major donors and supporters;
  • Create effective systems to track progress and evaluate programs to measure successes and effectively communicate this progress to board, partners and other constituents; and
  • Oversee the day-to-day administrative and personnel needs of the organization.

Expertise, Skills and Experience

Candidates for this position must be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven ability and experience in fundraising from both foundations and individual donors;
  • Superior leadership and strategic thinking skills;
  • Experience in organizational management with the ability to lead and coach senior staff, develop and manage high performance teams, and the ability to delegate;
  • Ability to manage a budget;
  • Experience working in collaboration with board members and staff inside organizations and with peer and partner organizations outside those organizations;
  • Ability to envision and articulate the large strategic picture for an organization;
  • Significant skill in written and oral communication;
  • Ability to work in stressful situations and handle many tasks simultaneously; and
  • Depth in their understanding of the environmental and conservation community inAlaskaand the political, economic and social context in which that community does its work.

Other characteristics of candidates that would be desirable but not essential are:

  • Experience as the first occupant of a newly established position and experience developing and operating strategies to grow organizations to the next level;
  • Experience in helping assimilate different workplace cultures into a new culture;
  • Experience with issue and/or political campaigns;
  • A B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent experience; and
  • Current resident ofAlaska.

Compensation

The Executive Director is a permanent full-time position working 40 hours per week.  The salary will be in the range of $80,000 to $90,000 with generous health, life insurance, retirement and leave benefits.

Position Location

This position is located inAnchorage,Alaskaand will require extensive travel throughout the state as well as travel to other states to advance the fundraising and program goals of the organization.
