Description

The Government of Bermuda and its international partners (the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University, Mission Blue, the US Southeast Region of NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and the Marine Conservation Biology Institute, among others) are seeking a Director for a major new initiative to establish the Sargasso Sea as a high seas protected area.

The success of the Director and the Sargasso Initiative will be measured by the approval before the close of 2013 of binding regional and international instruments within the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

This appointment is expected to continue until project completion in 2013.

The Sargasso Sea is a unique and ecologically crucial open ocean ecosystem. Its protection would constitute a notable global achievement and would provide a template and impetus for other efforts to promote international collaboration on behalf of high seas conservation.
For the Sargasso Initiative to succeed, an executive of vision and multiple capabilities is required. The Director must possess a proven high level of leadership, with exceptional skills in diplomacy, communications and administration.
• Leadership – To develop a clear, compelling, and achievable plan for the protection of the Sargasso Sea and to oversee the work that will make it possible.
• Diplomacy — To work with the Government of Bermuda and other Sargasso Initiative alliance members to engage governments, scientific bodies, businesses and conservation organizations to promote and support the Sargasso Sea protection plan.
• Communications — To oversee the compilation, summary and presentation of the scientific evidence needed to make the strongest case possible for the Initiative and to then make that case persuasively to all relevant national, local and international leaders and their institutions.
• Administration—To achieve the Initiative’s goals through a lean and highly-efficient headquarters operation and the recruitment and deployment of motivated and productive subcontractors as needed.
This is a unique opportunity to address one of the most challenging environmental issues of our time – the conservation and sustainable use of high seas ecosystems. A successful candidate must be ready to make history.
The Director will report to a Management Committee consisting of representatives from the Bermuda government and other Sargasso Initiative Alliance members. He or she must be willing to be based in, or travel frequently to Bermuda, and to travel internationally. Compensation will be commensurate with the importance of the undertaking.
This appointment is expected to continue until project completion in 2013.
Candidates should submit a CV with cover letter, to David Shaw, Chair of the Search Committee, at:
