Executive Director, Marine Conservation

 

WCS is a non-profit conservation organization that saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. WCS delivers the full spectrum of nature conservation, from preventing loss to protecting and restoring ecosystems.

 

With the largest and longest-standing field conservation program in the world, WCS works with governments, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities in more than 50 countries to support the conservation of over 27 million square kilometers of the highest ecological integrity areas across the globe that collectively contain:

 

• Habitat for around 50% of the world’s biodiversity and a wide range of charismatic megafauna.

 

• Geographies important for local and global climate stability; including some of the most carbon-dense regions of the globe.

 

• Resources on which ~80 million people who live within these areas rely upon.

 

Reporting to the Executive Vice President of WCS Global, the Executive Director of Marine Conservation leads the strategic direction and programmatic goals of the WCS marine portfolio. WCS seeks a proven leader in marine conservation to advance and coordinate our science and technical implementation, policy engagement, communications, and fundraising. This position leads a core team of experts, and shares responsibilities for resource mobilization, political engagement, and outreach to ensure that activities and impact are scaled globally.

 

WCS marine conservation efforts currently focus on five core areas: marine protected areas, community fisheries, coral reefs, marine mammals, and sharks and rays. Supporting these strategies, WCS maintains a strong commitment to applied marine scientific research and is building its capacity to leverage our impact through WCS's New York Aquarium and other innovative partnerships addressing conservation finance, capacity development, technology; etc. Leadership of the WCS marine conservation portfolio is coordinated with the regional directors who oversee the work of c. 250 marine conservation staff in 20 countries.

WCS is open to this position being based in various locations, with preference for one of WCS's regional hubs or country program offices. The salary range is $180,000-$250,000 USD. Salary and benefits subject to change depending on the geography.
