Description
Project environment:
The Catalan Foundation of l'Esplai, is a non for profit organisation which aims to promote education in the free time of children, youth and adults and to promote associative life as a participation space.
Among the activities of Area environmental d'Educación one is the elaboration, planning and execution of the projects of summer work camps of international interchange directed to young people worldwide.
The Project Delta Workcamp is one of these international exchange workcamps; this is a project dealing with youth volunteering to intervene iin the natural environment in which volunteers will be hosted.

DELTA WORKCAMP
Installed in Albergue Centers Esplai located in the municipality of the Prat de Llobregat (Baix Llobregat, Barcelona), in the heat of Delta of the Rio Llobregat, only 25 km of Barcelona, a group of 25 young people with 3 instructors and the aid of the local technicians will conduct different activities in three fields:
" Improvement of the natural spaces of the Delta of the Llobregat.
" Collaborations in conservation projects and management of flora and fauna of the natural spaces of the Delta of the Llobregat.
" Circulating environmental information and awareness about the natural spaces of the Delta of the Llobregat.
The volunteers would be lodged in the facilities of Albergue of the Delta of the Llobregat Centre Esplai, along with all the team.
This is a zone located in the central coast of Catalunya, close to Barcelona, the capital of the region. The Delta of the Rio Llobregat is an area with great peculiarities. It is a territorial mosaic highly modified by the hand of man who lodges great infrastructures like the airport of the Prat, highly industrialized areas, important roads and population centres at the same time as conserving an agricultural activity of irrigated land in regression and coastal zones of humedal and very interesting pine groves protected by special plans (natural zones ZEPA and Reserves).

The volunteers will be subject to the prescriptions of the hosting organization in everything relative to the projects: the duration of the working day, the actions to carry out, the responsibility, relation with the other organizations implied in the projects (local city councils, organizations...). etc...
During the period of voluntary service, we will monitor the voluntary young people we host, their mentorship will be customised and we will act according to the educational need they present..

We plan to do a double hosting, parallel in time:
1. Long-term hosting of volunteers with no special needs.
They will carry out different tasks within the team of environmental educators of the organisation, in charge of the management of work-camp projects and other varied educational projects, including the elaboration of didactic material, resources and educational activities for sustainability or logistic matters.
Furthermore, we plan to host long-term volunteers before the project actually starts so they can deeply understand the reality of the hosting entity and integrate in the dynamics of the Delta Workcamp, and so become a help and support to integration for the short-term volunteers, people with less opportunities.

2. Short-term hosting of volunteers with less opportunities
We also plan to host volunteers with less opportunities who would participate in the Delta Workcamp supporting the leaders, with the complementary help of long-term volunteers.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers

We suggest to host 2 international volunteers to participate in the project:
SHORT-TERM VOLUNTEER (VOLUNTEER WITH LESS OPPORTUNITIES)
They will participate supporting responsible leaders with the running of the workcamp (international exchange) for youth "Delta Workcamp", in El Prat de Llobregat, Baix Llobregat, Àrea metropolitana de Barcelona.

The work camps will take place during the months of June-July, with a duration of 14 days.
We propose to host the volunteers during 3 weeks (21 days):
" 4 days previous to the preparation of the work camp.
" 3 days of preparation of the work camps.
" 14 days of work camps.
The previous days to the preparation of the work camps, we want the volunteers to get to know organization with a brief stay in the premises of the organization where they will discover the day to day of the organization from the hand of the environmental educators and through taking part in various tasks: support, planning and gathering material.
Apart from knowing the reality of the organisation, we suggest that volunteers carry out the following tasks:
" Preparation / gathering of technical material. control and monitoring of stock of tools, marking, inventory.
" Preparation / gathering of fungible material: control and monitoring of stock of material, marking, inventory.
" Elaboration of information material: help with the elaboration of information posters and needed decoration.
Participation with the preparation of the workcamp and training, carried out two days before the camp starts.
During the camp, we propose volunteers to participate in:
" the organisation of the beginning of the camp.
" support tasks to entertainers during the workcamp in their technical works, such as the organisation of leisure activities and daily life.

LONG-TERM VOLUNTEERS
We propose their participation supporting with different tasks carried out in the Environmental Education Area of the organisation, apart from acting as support to leaders responsible of the running of the workcamp, also with the integration of the short-term volunteer.
Hosting: in July, August and September.
Work-camp: in July, 14 days.
He plan to host short-term volunteers for 3 months.
" Immersion, 7 days
" Intervention in the international work-camp, 21 days
" Support environmental educator, 60 days

During the hosting period, we plan to carry out the following services:
At arrival, we plan to carry out a deep immersion in the reality of our organisation with visits to the premises, guided by the responsible people of the educational project of natural schools of the organisation, so that volunteers may have a wide view of the context.
Once this is done, and when the short-term volunteer arrives (who will be hosted during 3 weeks), he/she will participate in the same dynamics as the short-term volunteer and participate as support leader for the ones responsible of the running of the international exchange work-camp for youth Delta work-camp and support the integration of short-term volunteer (in no case this will mean to adopt the role of mentor of the young person with less opportunities.

Once the work-camp has finished and the short-term volunteer has returned to his/her country, the long-term volunteer will carry out different tasks as support environmental educator in different actions. These services include:
" Elaboration of didactic material
" Preparation of resources and decoration for nature schools
" Design of sustainability education activities
" Support with the logistics which carrying out different activities.

We therefore plan this double hosting as a complement to the idea that the volunteering process leads to the following learning opportunities:
" technical learning and physical abilities: work with tools; specific tasks of different fields (cleaning, opening paths, conditioning of public areas, marking and stabilization of paths), improvement of physical performace,...
" specific knowledge: history, culture, technical and environmental knowledge, management of environmental education premises, basics about environmental education, management of projects, principles of environmental communication,....
" attitudes and values: group work; co-existence; efforts and personal improvement; tolerance and self-control, adaptation to different realities, resistence,...

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:

We would only admit volunteers over 18.
The candidates with an interest about the environment , rural development and the recovery of patrimony will be valued very positively.
Also, the volunteers with knowledge of nature or pedagogy and the experience in dealing with children and young people will be valued positively.
We will also value positively a predisposition and qualification for technical work in the interior (training in construction, carpentry, painting, facilities, assemblies...) and for jobs of manual or plastic ability (design, drawing, crafts...)
It would be preferable if the volunteer had maintained or maintained a relation with a similar organization dedicated to the promotion of the associations related to the education in the free time.

We will consider all applications based on:
" Motivation letter.
" CV
" Situation relative to program JAMO
The process of selection of volunteers will take place on the basis of the valuation of a tribunal formed by the person in charge of the Area of environmental Education in addition to the four coordinators of projects of the organization. The tribunal will base its selection on the objective criteria exposed in the previous paragraphs being based on the information available on the volunteers: letter of motivation and curriculum of the volunteer.

Number of volunteers hosted:

2 volunteers: 1 of them with special needs (short-term); the other one, with no special needs (long-term).

Special needs (if applicable):

Hosint European volunteers and, more specifically, youth with less opportunities from JAMO, part of the YiA programme is one of the leading principles of our organisation.
We are working to make a world with more solidarity, a society that works for the dignity of all the people. That it fights against racism, sexism, poverty, hunger and ignorance, servitude and exploitation. A society where wealth is generated and distributes itself with fairness. A society where access to education is in equal conditions, and in which everybody is considered useful socially.
The ample experience of our organizations of leisure time starts in 80's in diverse underprivileged districts of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, until the formation of the Foundation in 1996 with the purpose of equipping organizational resources that make possible the coordination and the execution of common projects.
During the monitoring, the mentorship will be personalised to each volunteer, and it we act accordingly depending on the specific educational need of each one. Mentoring will be done be qualified professionals.
Because the work camps include walks of a certain duration and there is also technical work that require certain effort, it would be an advantage if the volunteers would be physically fit. It is also important that the volunteers know how to swim, as we will carry out some sea activities.

Prevención de riesgos, seguridad y protección:

Our organization is equipped with legalized infrastructures that allow to host European volunteers (nature schools; camp houses and campings) we also have trainned personnel with extense environmental education experience in the scope of the nonformal education. The professionals of the Area of Environmental Education have a lot of experince in the evaluation and minimización of risks.
The Catalan Fundació of l'Esplai fulfills the legal obligations in the matter of prevention of labor risks and these obligations are considered mandatory in hosting the volunteers.
The same regime of prevention of risks will be applied to the volunteers as is applied to the workers, facilitating the knowledge of the existing emergency plans providing the personal protective equipment in the situations in which they are necessary.
During the hosting period, the young volunteers will have an individual mentorship and we will act according to the arising needs
