Description
Overview:

The Zoological Society of London is seeking two interns to provide support to the Europe Conservation Programme. Successful candidates will be part of a busy team, focusing on marine and freshwater projects, and will have the opportunity to gain experience interning at a globally respected conservation organisation.

The four-month long internships will be largely focused on the analysis and assimilation of field data collected during the 2015 field season, with contribution to the authorship of project reports. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining and updating the marine mammal sightings database; data input and analysis; representing ZSL at meetings and events; and providing general support to all other projects in the Europe Conservation Programme.

The successful candidates must have an undergraduate and, preferably, a Masters level degree in Marine/Aquatic Biology or a related subject. The candidates will be self-motivated and possess excellent communication skills as they will be tasked with drafting reports and stakeholder communications. The internships will also involve the analysis of a variety of ecological/environmental data and the successful application of statistical analysis methods. Experience of aquatic sampling techniques would be advantageous, as would an existing knowledge of the Thames Estuary and its fauna.

It is essential that candidates have either a full UK or international manual driving licence and be confident of driving through London. The internships will be for four months, starting on 19th October 2015 and running until the 12th February 2016. The role is part time (4 days per week) and is based at ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department in Regent’s Park. All applicants must be able to show that they have ‘the right to work in the UK’.

Please note: that this is a voluntary position and there should be no expectation that any paid position will arise out of this internship. However, ZSL will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches (maximum £5 a day).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Analysis of 2015 field survey data from eel, smelt and seal monitoring projects.
  • Drafting of annual project reports.
  • Desktop research into ‘Blue Employment Initiatives’.
  • Support with stakeholder communications, including preparation of handouts, advertising and logistical support for stakeholder events.
  • Maintenance of marine mammals sightings database.

Person Specification:
  • Undergraduate or higher degree, in Marine/Aquatic Biology or other relevant subject.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of freshwater and marine conservation issues.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, including experience of statistical software (eg. R).
  • Excellent written English and report-writing skills.
  • Full UK driving licence (essential).
  • Highly competent IT skills (Microsoft Office).
