Description

EU Trade and Environment - Lawyer

Heath & Environment - London or Brussels

About the role

This exciting and demanding role needs an experienced lawyer who will make an immediate contribution to our work on the implications of trade policy on EU environmental protection.  The role is designed to contribute to ClientEarth’s campaign which aims to ensure that priority is given to public interest considerations and the rule of law in the current Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations; and other EU international trade arrangements, including the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The substantive focus of the work includes proposals which would impact regulation of toxic chemicals, energy and food safety.

This position is currently funded for 12 months; during that time, continued financial support will be actively sought to enable work to be carried on contemporaneously with the ongoing TTIP negotiations.

The role is based in ClientEarth’s Brussels or London office. The successful candidate would work with a team of 4 people operating on a cross-office basis.

About you

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record in EU law, particularly the functioning of EU institutions. You will also have a good understanding and experience of EU and international trade law. You will be able to immediately develop and implement a strategy for public interest legal interventions in the TTIP process. More generally, you will be a strategic thinker, able to apply legal skills creatively, an excellent communicator, comfortable in conveying complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences and able to facilitate ongoing co-operation with a wide range of civil society stakeholders.  You will also be used to delivering independent self-motivated work products which are closely integrated with other related work streams on an ongoing basis.
