Ethiopian Wolf (FZS)

The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is an international conservation organisation based in Germany. FZS is active in biodiversity-rich areas with projects on four continents. The Africa Programme is the organisation’s largest and oldest and includes projects in five focal countries: Ethiopia, DR Congo, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In Ethiopia, FZS has been active on the ground for well over ten years and currently focusses on the Bale Mountains, with the objective of supporting the Ethiopian Government and local communities in conserving Africa’s largest tract of afroalpine habitat and its unique and endangered biodiversity.

FZS is planning to strengthen the delivery of its conservation projects in the country and the management of donor-funded projects, by establishing the new position of the

Main duties

  • Ensuring the legal basis & good relations with government agencies 

  • Development, managing and reporting of/ for donor-funded projects

  • Development and implementation of effective and quality results-based planning, monitoring & evaluation systems and processes

  • Key partners (national & international) liason supporting, but not replacing, current relationships between project staff and partners

  • Coordination of fundraising and donor relations in Ethiopa

  • Development and maintenance of co-management agreements

  • Development of new projects for FZS, that fit within the global strategy

  • Support to the Bale Mountains & other programme managers including budget and operational plans, assessment, reporting, capacity building, monitoring, financial management

  • Support work planning, performance appraisals, coaching staff and/or others in project leadership etc.

  • Support and technical advice provided on relevant aspects of project activities and adherence to Africa Programme Strategy

  • Line management of FZS programme managers, Head of Finance and Administration in Ethiopia

  • Support, as required to FZS ARO and HQ


Qualifikation & requirements

  • M.Sc. or higher degree and at least 10 years practical experience in relevant fields, preferably in Africa

  • 5-10 years experience in managing bilateral donor funded projects with experience of complying with bilateral donor (e.g. EU, KfW, USAID) procurement regulations and financial reporting requirements, financial audits, internal and external evaluations

  • Proven experience in project design and fundraising with NGOs, private and bilateral donors

  • Proven experience in project monitoring and evaluation system design and implementation including protocol piloting, database management and data analysis

  • Excellent writing skills & communication abilities

  • Leadership skills and experience in the national and international conservation or development area

  • Experience in developing and maintaining partnerships with a diversity of key stakeholders

  • Fluency in English, both written and oral

  • Working knowledge of at least one of the following language desired: German, Amharic and Oromifaa

  • Persuasiveness and negotiation skills, excellent networking skills 

  • Strategic and analytical perspective
