Ethical Trail Leader  Central America

Reporting to: Project Coordinator or Country Coordinator based In-Country
Responsible to: The Directors of the Society & the Operations Managers, London HQ
Location: Mobile expedition and field project sites in Central America


PRIMARY FUNCTION

To lead mobile volunteer travel and conservation experiences and oversee all the logistical and administrative aspects of the expedition. This involves supervision of the budget, project resources and equipment, overall responsibility for the general welfare of all staff and volunteers.

GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE ROLE

- Leading the expedition and supervising all aspects of volunteer travel;
- Designing the itinerary and planning and overseeing all project/expedition logistics;
- Ensuring efficient communication is maintained between expedition team and country HQ;
- Administration and control of field budget and production of accounts and reports to London HQ;
- Managing local staff and the allocation, use and maintenance of all resources;
- Supervising the activities of and ensuring the health and safety of project staff, volunteers and host-country participants, with continual risk assessment, and overseeing their use of resources;
- To manage the expectations of the volunteers.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- To organise and plan the itinerary and all other aspects of the Trail, to lead it and be responsible for all aspects of it;
- To secure the health and safety of all volunteers, any other Trail staff and any host country participants at all times, to take charge of and deal with any medical or other emergency or incident should they arise and to initiate and implement any necessary emergency medical or other evacuation procedure;
- To research and familiarise herself or himself with all the areas and sites comprised in the Trail;
- To plan and oversee all the logistical aspects relating to the Trail, including arranging safe and secure accommodation and volunteer travel in country, the purchase of local supplies and any necessary equipment and to ensure the smooth day to day running of the Trail;
- To maintain an effective means of communication with the Society’s London office throughout the period of the Trail;
- To maintain communications with the Society’s London office throughout and make weekly situation reports to the Society’s London office and to any relevant country headquarters and produce a final report on each phase of the Trail
- To be responsible for the field budget for the Trail and to ensure that expenditure is only expended in accordance with the field budget and that each phase of the Trail is deployed and executed within its budget;
- Prior to the commencement of their participation to provide a full briefing to the volunteers on health and safety and any other relevant aspects of participation on the Trail and to supervise, motivate and be responsible for the wellbeing of the volunteers throughout their participation on the Trail; to maintain accurate and up to date field budget records and accounts, to update them regularly and produce final accounts for each phase of the Trail, other than where exceptional circumstances apply, within ten days of the end of the phase in question;
- To be responsible for and manage any local employees and host country participants;
- To meet the volunteers on their arrival at the international airport of the country in which the Trail commences;
- To ensure the security of all Trail equipment and maintain it in good condition

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Contract Duration: 10 weeks with the possibility of extension.
Accommodation: Basic accommodation provided on mobile expedition.
Travel: Contribution towards an international airfare (capped) plus internal travel as necessary to the fulfilment of duties.
Subsistence: Basic food provided during expedition.
Salary: £150 bonus on successful completion of each trail.
Training: Pre-departure training provided.
