The Equity & Justice Outreach and Project Assistant will provide campaign, research, communications, and administrative support for the Climate and Energy (C&E) program’s cultural competency projects. The Project Associate will facilitate communication and coordination among staff engaging with external partners in the environmental justice community. 

This is a temporary, two-year position.

Responsibilities

  • Social and Environmental Justice: Provide support for the development and expansion of C&E’s equity, resilience and energy justice work, including coordinating partnerships with local partners and assisting in research needed to understand and document the problems associated with communities adopting solar power and communities dealing with sea level rise.
  • Project Administration: Provide general project administration support, including compiling information, managing routine correspondence, arranging travel and meetings arrangements, scheduling, reimbursing expenses, supporting events, etc.
  • Support for Senior Outreach Coordinator: Provide administrative support with regard to scheduling, travel, meeting preparation, communications and other tasks as required. 
  • Financial Management: With direction from supervisor and the C&E senior coordinator, support the development of project budgets,monitor project expenditures and track project schedules. Ensure C&E staff meets cultural competency project deadlines.
  • General: Maintain familiarity with other C&E projects and UCS programs. Maintain flexibility to be able to quickly shift priorities based on program needs. 
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

The position requires self-motivation, good interpersonal skills, attention to detail, familiarity with office operations, experience balancing competing priorities, and excellent skills in word processing, web research, and database use/maintenance. A bachelor's degree is required. A background in science, political science, communications or business management is preferred.

Demonstrated top-notch written and oral communication skills with a wide variety of audiences are important for this position. Applicants should have strong administrative and organizational skills and have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.  Familiarity with non-profit organizations and an interest in work that serves the public interest is helpful. At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

A proven track record of working with diverse constituencies and coordinating with partners from various backgrounds is preferred. Two to four years of successful relevant and comparable experience as a program, administrative, organizing or research assistant, preferably in a non-profit setting is required. Familiarity with energy and climate policy-making and/or environmental/public health/public safety issues helpful, but not required. On-the-job training of six months is available to become familiar with UCS personnel, programs, and procedures. Position must be able to work both independently and in teams, and to interact professionally with partner organizations and UCS colleagues in sensitive matters.

May spend extended periods at computer terminal. May occasionally have to live up to 50 lbs. Overnight travel (once a month). Drivers’ license helpful but not required.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time, two-year, benefits-eligible position based in UCS’s Washington, DC office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is in the low $40’s. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
