The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are seeking to fill the position of Environmental Sustainability Officer at the P4 level, based in the Facilities Management Branch at our Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The Environmental Sustainability Officer is a technical specialist who leads a multi-disciplinary team. S/he manages a programme of work that develops policy and strategy related to environmental sustainability management for WFP’s operations, and provides outreach and support to WFP field operations to enable WFP to systematically measure, manage and report on environmental impacts, risks and mitigation actions, as well as the costs and savings associated with improved resource management. WFP’s programme of work is shaped by UN-wide undertakings including the Climate Neutral Initiative and the commitment by agency heads to introduce Environmental Management Systems, and includes environmental aspects including energy and greenhouse gas emissions, other air emissions, water management, sustainable procurement and waste management. WFP’s mission is to be a leader in environmental sustainability in the UN system, and to deliver innovative, cost-effective and best-practice solutions throughout the organizations’ facilities and operations.

Reporting to the Chief, Facilities Management Branch, the Environmental Sustainability Officer will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Lead the development and implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) for WFP, through engagement and consultation with key internal and external stakeholders, and in accordance with the commitments of the UN High Level Committee of Management;
  • Lead WFP’s ongoing participation in the UN-wide Climate Neutral Initiative, including yearly greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint reporting, implementing and updating the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Strategy, providing technical advice/tools/support to field operations to achieve reductions, and integrating this work with the Environmental Management System as the latter becomes established;
  • Oversee the collection and reporting of baseline environmental data (energy, GHG, water, waste and training as a minimum) and periodic updates, including documenting environmental management policies and activities within WFP, and reporting these to a range of internal and external audiences;
  • Build the capacity of HQ Divisions and country operations throughout WFP to integrate cost effective environmental management in the above areas into their standard operating procedures, through providing access to technical expertise, best practice guidelines, advice, training, awareness raising activities and developing functional networks (subject matter experts and Green Champions);
  • Serve as an advocate for strong action in environmental management at WFP and in the UN System, through interaction with WFP senior management, funders and staff, and by representing WFP on interagency environmental management bodies;
  • Provide management and oversight of a complementary work area, namely the management of global premises data for WFP properties worldwide, including co-ordinating the reporting of IPSAS-compliant financial data and development of capacity building tools to improve facilities management practices worldwide;
  • Manage a small team of professional, general service and temporary personnel, including workplan development, staff recruitment, performance management and development; manage budgets within the delegated authority.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education:

  • University degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies or a related field;
  • Membership of an internationally recognized environmental accreditation body, such as Chartered Environmentalist, Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, Certified Environmental Manager or equivalent is highly desirable.

 

Experience:

  • At least eight years (of which three international) of postgraduate progressively responsible professional experience in environmental management, environmental consulting or environmental programme delivery roles;
  • Prior experience of Greenhouse Gas/Energy management.
  • Experience of other environmental aspects will be well regarded, particularly water/wastewater, waste, transport, procurement, environmental management systems, or environmental compliance;
  • Previous experience with a UN organization and/or of working in developing countries is an asset.
